About Battle of Civitate Re-enactment

The Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of Civitate brings one of the most decisive medieval conflicts in Southern Italy back to life in the streets of San Paolo di Civitate, in the province of Foggia. Commemorating the battle of June 17-18, 1053, between the Normans of Humphrey of Hauteville and the papal army of Leo IX, the event features costumed processions, falconry, medieval dances, period food tastings, and a spectacular battle reconstruction, transforming the Daunian village into an 11th-century camp steeped in history and Apulian identity.

A deep dive into the Daunian Middle Ages

Every year, the village of San Paolo di Civitate, in the Alto Tavoliere area of the Foggia province, transforms into a living 11th-century encampment. The Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of Civitate is a widespread event that blends historical rigor with popular entertainment, featuring costumed performers, men-at-arms, ladies, falconers, and Norman knights to recount one of the most significant chapters in the history of Southern Italy.

The Battle of Civitate of 1053

The clash took place on June 17-18, 1053, on the plains of northern Apulia, at the confluence of the Staina stream and the Fortore River, near the ancient city of Civitate. On one side were the Normans led by Humphrey of Hauteville, Count of Apulia and Calabria; on the other, a coalition of Swabians, Lombards, and Italics supported by Pope Leo IX. The Norman victory marked a turning point, laying the foundations for a state that would shape the history of Southern Italy for centuries, leading up to the Unification of 1861.

The Re-enactment Program

The event spans several days, combining cultural study with live performance. Recent editions have included:

  • a historical conference with internationally renowned scholars and medievalists, hosted in the former Convent of Sant'Antonio di Padova;
  • a historical pageant dedicated to the reception of Pope Leo IX, featuring hundreds of participants in period attire;
  • falconry displays, medieval dances, games, and combat workshops;
  • a fireworks show and period food tastings along the streets of the town center;
  • the battle re-enactment, the highlight of the event, featuring a reconstruction of the clash between the two armies.

The Locations: From the historic center to Madonna del Ponte

The heart of the festival beats in the historic center of San Paolo di Civitate, around Piazza Sant'Antonio and the Civic Archaeological Museum, while the battle reconstruction takes place in the open spaces of the Madonna del Ponte area, an ideal setting for encampments, tournaments, and mass scenes. This itinerary allows visitors to move from the scholarly insights of the museum to the thrill of the live re-enactment.

A project for the identity of the Apulia Region

The re-enactment is promoted by the Municipality of San Paolo di Civitate with the support of the Apulia Region, under regional law no. 42 of 2024, designed to enhance the historical identity of local territories and create opportunities for young people. This investment has allowed the event, which began in 2024, to grow rapidly and become a highly anticipated appointment in the Capitanata region.
