The historical archery competition by the Dragoni del Brintesis in Borgo Valsugana
The Disfida del Dragone is a historical archery competition held in the center of Borgo Valsugana, in the province of Trento, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Organized by the Dragoni del Brintesis Group in collaboration with the local Pro Loco, the event gathers archers in medieval costume to compete at the target, bringing the techniques and gestures of ancient archery back to life. It has become a staple for fans of historical archery and re-enactment, successfully combining sport, tradition, and the promotion of local heritage.
The Dragoni del Brintesis group was founded in Borgo Valsugana in the spring of 2016, following an archery course funded by the local Youth Plan that inspired many participants to pursue the activity and delve into the world of historical re-enactment. The cultural association focuses its reconstruction on the period between 1380 and 1410 and includes a section of drummers and flag-wavers, as well as a medieval camp featuring archery, the study of historical combat techniques, games, and ancient crafts.
The group's name is inspired by an ancient Valsugana legend, which tells of a great dragon, the "Shining Dragon," that lived between Cima Dodici and Lake Ravetta, spending its summers in the lake's waters. The term "Brintesis" is the Latin name used in medieval times to refer to the Brenta river that flows through the town. History, legend, and territory thus intertwine in the identity of the event.
The day is dedicated to the challenge between archers, who face off at the target in a picturesque setting. The competition takes place in the Town Hall Cloister, in Piazza Degasperi, and in case of bad weather, it is moved indoors to the Sala Marcellina Paternolli on the first floor of the Town Hall. The event also features the participation of historian Dr. Roberto Bazzanella, who enriches the day with insights into the medieval context of the Valsugana valley.
The Disfida del Dragone is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Borgo Valsugana, a historic village overlooking the Brenta river and home to the famous Palio dela Brenta. The event is an opportunity to discover the town's historic center, the re-enactment traditions of Trentino, and the passion with which the Dragoni del Brintesis preserve and pass on the medieval memory of the territory.
