The patronal feast of the seaside village at the foot of Tindari, in honor of Saint Joseph
In Oliveri, a charming seaside village nestled on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Metropolitan City of Messina, in Sicily, at the foot of the promontory and the Sanctuary of Tindari, Saint Joseph has been the community's patron saint for generations. Devotion to the Patriarch of the Holy Family is so deeply rooted that it is honored twice a year, marking the religious and civil calendar of the town.
The first anniversary falls on March 19th, the national liturgical date dedicated to Saint Joseph: the village gathers around the saint with solemn Mass and the traditional rites of the spring festival. However, the most impressive celebration is the grand patronal festival, held on the second Sunday of October, when the statue of the saint is carried in procession for the second time through the streets of the town.
In the heart of Oliveri, at the Mother Church of Saint Joseph, solemn Masses are celebrated in honor of the patron saint. After the religious services, the procession of the statue begins, accompanied by the sound of the local brass band, which travels through all the main streets of the town. Faithful from neighboring municipalities also participate in the procession, a sign of how strong the veneration for the Patriarch of the Church is.
The evening procession is a spectacle of lights that the inhabitants follow from their balconies, while visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Sicilian night, which concludes with traditional fireworks illuminating the sky above the coastline and the sea of the Aeolian Islands. Between stalls, music, and traditional sweets, the festival unites the sacred dimension with a popular celebration.
Celebrating Saint Joseph in Oliveri also means discovering a village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, known for its beach, the ancient tuna fishery, and its proximity to the Laghetti di Marinello Nature Reserve and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tindari. The patronal festival represents one of the most defining moments for the community of the Municipality of Oliveri, an opportunity to come together and renew an ancient bond with the patron saint.
For 2026, the community of Oliveri renews the traditional double celebration in honor of Saint Joseph, the village's patron saint. The liturgical feast is held on March 19th, while the grand patronal festival is expected on the second Sunday of October, with the procession of the statue, the brass band, and fireworks illuminating the Tyrrhenian coast.
As per tradition, the rites take place in the Mother Church of Saint Joseph and along the main streets of the town, with the participation of the faithful from Oliveri and neighboring municipalities. The precise program of the October 2026 festivities will be published by the Municipality of Oliveri and the Saint Joseph Parish closer to the event.
Religious rites are held at the Mother Church of Saint Joseph (Piazza Dante), while the procession and festivities enliven Piazza Luigi Pirandello and the main streets of Oliveri (ME).
