The grain fair and traditional Salento peasant wedding celebration in Minervino di Lecce
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Minervino di Lecce, a charming village in the Grecìa Salentina area, summer brings one of the most authentic local events: the Harvest Fair (Fiera delle Messi), traditionally held on the first Sunday of July, which has recently intertwined with the U Paninu d'a Zita Festival. It is a weekend where the community gathers to celebrate its farming roots, amidst the scent of freshly harvested grain and the authentic flavors of the Salento land.
The Harvest Fair has its roots in the time of year when grain is harvested in Salento. The streets of the town center—traditionally Via Duca degli Abruzzi, Via G. Scarciglia, and Piazza San Pietro, near the Town Hall—fill with stalls offering local products, textiles, ceramics, various goods, and displays of ancient crafts from Minervino and neighboring towns. The heart of the fair is the traditional threshing demonstration, which revives the tools and techniques of the past, alongside food stands where visitors can taste local specialties.
The U Paninu d'a Zita Festival—literally the "bride's sandwich"—celebrates the ancient love feasts of Salento, when families and friends would gather to celebrate weddings with simplicity and authenticity. The symbol of the evening is the bride's sandwich filled with mortadella, accompanied by wine, lupin beans, traditional sweets, and artisanal spumone. The conviviality is enlivened by live pizzica, the folk music that defines summer nights in Salento, and a market featuring local agricultural products and crafts.
Recognized as one of the 'Authentic Villages of Italy', Minervino di Lecce is a gateway to Grecìa Salentina, an area with an ancient Griko language and culture. Attending the Harvest Fair and the U Paninu d'a Zita Festival means experiencing the truest side of Puglia, defined by agricultural rituals, oral traditions, and village festivals, far from mass tourism circuits. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the Salento hinterland, its cuisine, and its warm hospitality.
The Harvest Fair and the U Paninu d'a Zita Festival return to Minervino di Lecce in 2026, renewing the summer appointment that combines the ancient agricultural grain fair with the re-enactment of traditional Salento peasant weddings.
The dates and the official program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released. As is customary, a weekend between late June and early July is expected, featuring a market of local products and crafts, tastings of the bride's sandwich with mortadella and wine, and Salento folk music. Updates will be published on the channels of the Municipality of Minervino di Lecce.
Minervino di Lecce can be reached by car via the SS16 state road and the provincial roads of lower Salento; the nearest train station is Maglie (Ferrovie Sud Est lines), just a few kilometers away. The closest airports are Brindisi and Bari.
The event takes place between late June and early July. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Minervino di Lecce.
Admission is free. Food tastings and purchases at the stalls are paid.
