The open-air metal festival in the woods of Altrei/Anterivo, at 1400 meters altitude
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Hammerfest is a music festival dedicated to metal, held annually in Altrei/Anterivo, a small German-speaking municipality located at the southern tip of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-South Tyrol. Founded in 2013 by the Nordischer Kreis association, the festival has grown over the years to become a staple for heavy music fans from across the region and neighboring provinces.
What makes Hammerfest unique is its setting. The concerts take place at the Altrei sports field, in the Ebnerrast area, in an open-air space immersed in the forest at about 1400 meters above sea level. Part of the area is covered, and a free camping site is available around the stage, allowing the audience to experience the event in an informal and communal way, with the chance to pitch tents under the fir trees.
Admission to Hammerfest is free: the organization's philosophy, summarized by the slogan "by metalheads for metalheads," is to provide a free, self-managed space where the local metal scene can meet and grow. The musical program spans various subgenres, from death and thrash metal to more extreme sounds, focusing primarily on emerging bands from the alpine territory alongside guests from outside the region.
The municipality of Anterivo/Altrei, with its few hundred inhabitants, is known for its forests, high-altitude pastures, and the traditional cultivation of lupin coffee. The choice to host a metal festival in such a quiet, natural setting is part of Hammerfest's charm, blending the energy of live music with the evocative beauty of the South Tyrolean alpine landscape.
The 2026 edition of Hammerfest in Altrei/Anterivo does not yet have official dates at the time of publication. The free metal festival organized by Nordischer Kreis has been held in recent years between late June and August: we recommend following the "Hammerfest SouthTyrol" social media channels to stay updated on dates, line-ups, and details as soon as they are announced.
Anterivo/Altrei can be reached by car from the Adige Valley (A22 motorway exit Egna/Ora), heading up towards the Val di Fiemme and taking the turn-off for Altrei. The village is located on a scenic plateau south of Bolzano.
Admission is free. A free camping area is available near the stage. We recommend wearing mountain-appropriate clothing: even in summer, the 1400-meter altitude brings cool temperatures in the evening.
For up-to-date information on dates and the program, we recommend following the official social media channels (Facebook and Instagram "Hammerfest SouthTyrol") or emailing the organizers at [email protected].
