About Gustannurca

In San Mango Piemonte, a village nestled in the Picentini Mountains near Salerno, the Campana PGI Annurca apple is more than just a fruit: it is a symbol of local identity and rural heritage. Gustannurca is the festival created by the Pro Loco to celebrate and promote the region's agricultural excellence, with MelaDay serving as the highlight, featuring tastings, educational workshops, a historical pageant, exhibitions, and traditional folk music. A celebration of knowledge and flavor that marks the autumn season of the 'queen of apples' in a town that serves as the headquarters of the National Association of Annurca Apple Cities.

Gustannurca, the Picentini Annurca Apple Festival

Gustannurca is the event organized by the Pro Loco of San Mango Piemonte to support and showcase the agricultural treasures of the Picentini area, starting with the Campana PGI Annurca apple. The town of San Mango Piemonte, located in the province of Salerno, Campania, is home to the National Association of Annurca Apple Cities: here, apple cultivation is not just a folkloric detail, but a vital part of the local economy and collective memory. The festival was born to share this heritage with a wider audience, blending education, gastronomy, and entertainment.

MelaDay, the main event

The most anticipated moment of the Gustannurca project is MelaDay, a celebration of 'knowledge and flavors' dedicated to the Annurca apple. It takes place in autumn, once the apples have completed their ripening cycle and developed their characteristic red hue on traditional straw beds. During past editions, the village has come alive from morning until night with a continuous program weaving together culture, cuisine, games, and music throughout the historic center and Piazza Sannazaro.

How the event has unfolded in past editions

The format perfected by the Pro Loco, adapted over the years, typically includes:

  • Morning opening of producer and artisan stalls;
  • Historical pageant in costume and a leisurely stroll through the historic center, accompanied by a traditional storyteller;
  • Cooking demonstrations with professional chefs and home cooks, focusing on recipes featuring Annurca apples;
  • Presentation of fairy tales and illustrated stories created by local school children;
  • Gourmet competitions like the 'Dolcepoesia' dessert challenge and themed evenings in local pizzerias;
  • Traditional Campanian folk music and dance in the afternoon and evening.

Some editions have expanded to two days, featuring conferences on rural tourism, local traditions, and sustainability, along with special hospitality packages created in collaboration with local restaurants and trattorias: those who booked received a 'MelaCoin' voucher to collect a free kilogram of Annurca apples at the Pro Loco stands.

The historical pageant and the Santomango challenge

One of the most spectacular elements of MelaDay is the historical re-enactment of the challenge of the Santomangos for the beautiful Bianca da Procida, brought to life by a costumed procession through the village. It is a way to link the town's signature fruit to local history and offer visitors a vivid image of the community beyond mere tastings.

The Campana PGI Annurca apple

The Annurca is considered the 'queen of apples' of Southern Italy: small, firm, crunchy, and fragrant, with a distinct acidity that makes it prized in both cooking and pastry-making. Its uniqueness lies in the ripening technique, which takes place on the ground rather than on the tree, involving the manual rotation of the fruits until they reach their full red color. This entire agricultural tradition is the focus of MelaDay, which showcases it through workshops, meetings, and tastings of cakes, cookies, jams, liqueurs, and savory dishes reinterpreted by local chefs.

San Mango Piemonte and the Picentini Mountains

San Mango Piemonte is a small hillside town a few kilometers from Salerno, overlooking the Sele plain and resting on the slopes of the Picentini Mountains. A visit to the festival can easily be combined with a walk through the apple orchards, exploring rural hamlets, or a trip to the Amalfi Coast or the archaeological site of Paestum. It is the kind of event that allows you to discover a side of Campania less touched by mass tourism, defined by charming villages, quality agricultural production, and local community spirit.
