The challenge for Italian amateur choirs in the city of music
The Guido d'Arezzo National Polyphonic Competition is the event that, every late November, brings together Italy's best non-professional choral groups in Arezzo. Established in 1984 as the "younger sibling" of the renowned International Polyphonic Competition—which the Tuscan city has hosted since 1952—the National event is now one of the most coveted amateur choral competitions in Italy. The 43rd edition is scheduled for November 28 and 29, 2026.
Choirs compete in three distinct categories, testing the versatility and preparation of each group:
The rules are reserved exclusively for choirs composed of non-professional singers, with specific requirements regarding the age of the choristers and the background of the conductors: a choice that highlights the passion and dedication of amateur choral music, the true heart of the Italian musical tradition.
Performances take place in the Basilica of San Domenico, in the historic center of Arezzo: an artistically and acoustically fascinating venue, where the famous Cross by Cimabue serves as the backdrop for a day of choral music. The intimate and solemn setting is perfect for enhancing the nuances of a cappella singing and welcoming an audience of enthusiasts.
The prestige of the competition lies in its main prize: the winners of the 1st prize in each category gain automatic entry into the Guido d'Arezzo International Polyphonic Competition the following year, one of the most important choral showcases in Europe. The highest overall score also opens the doors to the Italian Choral Grand Prix. For Italian groups, it is an unmissable opportunity for comparison and growth.
It is no coincidence that all this takes place in Arezzo, in the heart of the Province of Arezzo and Tuscany: the city was the birthplace of Guido d'Arezzo (Guido Monaco), the Benedictine monk who in the 11th century invented modern musical notation and the system of notes. The event, organized by the Guido d'Arezzo Foundation with the Municipality of Arezzo, is a living tribute to this legacy and a reference point for choirs and conductors from all over the peninsula.
The call for entries for the 43rd edition has been published by the Guido d'Arezzo Foundation. The competition is divided into three categories: sacred music, secular music, and commemorative program, each with specific repertoire requirements (pieces by composers from different eras, from the 1400-1600 period to 20th-century and contemporary Italian authors).
Participation is reserved for choirs composed of non-professional singers; the registration fee is 100 euros per group. The winners of the 1st prize in each category will gain automatic entry into the prestigious Guido d'Arezzo International Polyphonic Competition the following year.
The list of admitted choral groups and the performance order will be announced after registration closes. For the full announcement, rules, and registration forms, please refer to the official website polifonico.org.
