Classical music, masterclasses, and young talent in the medieval village of Cassero
Every summer, in the heart of the Valdichiana area near Arezzo, the medieval village of Monte San Savino becomes a vast open-air conservatory. The Monte San Savino Festival is a classical music event that, over three weeks between July and August, weaves together education and performance: on one hand, masterclasses led by top-tier instructors, and on the other, a packed schedule of concerts open to the public.
The festival is organized by the Monteservizi special agency in collaboration with the Municipality of Monte San Savino, in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. The artistic direction is entrusted to pianist Luigi Tanganelli, who has spent years building a project capable of attracting students and musicians from all over Italy and abroad.
The core of the festival consists of masterclasses for instrumentalists and singers, accompanied by final student concerts that allow participants to perform for an audience. Recurring activities include the MusicLab, a laboratory for string instruments created in partnership with the "U. Cappetti" Municipal School of Music, and the "Musica Antica al Femminile" workshop, dedicated to 17th-century Italian vocal repertoire. Scholarships are available for the most deserving students.
Concerts take place in some of the village's most evocative spots: the open-air Teatro dei Giardini Pensili, the cloister of the Palazzo di Monte (Town Hall), the amphitheater, and the Teatro Verdi. The architectural backdrop of the town, featuring the Cassero and works by Sansovino, adds charm to every evening, turning the listening experience into a blend of music and historical heritage.
Over the years, the festival has hosted prominent soloists and ensembles, ranging from piano recitals to symphonic concerts, and from opera galas to collaborations with conservatories, such as the Ravel Itinerant Festival, created in partnership with musical institutions across central Italy. Audiences enjoy a varied program that spans from chamber music to opera, always with a special focus on the next generation of performers.
From July 13 to August 1, 2026, the village of Monte San Savino hosts a new edition of the classical music festival directed by Luigi Tanganelli. Once again, the program weaves together the educational aspect of masterclasses with concerts open to the public in the most evocative settings of the historic center.
Among the 2026 highlights are the Junior MasterClasses, reserved for young instrumentalists up to 16 years old, designed to introduce younger students to professional music studies. The MusicLab (scheduled for the first few days), a laboratory for string instruments in collaboration with the "U. Cappetti" Municipal School of Music, and the "Musica Antica al Femminile" workshop are also confirmed.
The concert schedule, featuring recitals, opera galas, and symphonic events, will be published on the Monteservizi website in the weeks leading up to the event.
The official dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed: from July 13 to August 1, 2026. The detailed concert program, including artists and times, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Expected structure of the edition, based on previous years:
The main novelty of 2026 is the Junior MasterClasses for instrumentalists up to 16 years old, which expands the festival's educational offerings to younger musicians.
