The Gschnoner Kirchtag, the heart of Gschnon's tradition

In the silence of the woods and farms surrounding Gschnon (Casignano), a tiny mountain hamlet in the Municipality of Montagna sulla strada del vino (Montan an der Weinstraße), one of the most cherished community events returns every August 15th: the Gschnoner Kirchtag. The German term Kirchtag refers to the patronal feast, a tradition deeply rooted throughout South Tyrol, which finds its origins in the day of the church's consecration or the feast day of its patron saint.

Our Lady of the Snows and the Assumption Day

In Gschnon, the festival coincides with August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary (Mariä Himmelfahrt), and honors Our Lady of the Snows (Maria Schnee), the patron saint of the hamlet's small church. It is one of the most significant dates in the South Tyrolean farming calendar: at the end of the summer months of hard work in the fields and vineyards, the community gathers to give thanks and celebrate together, in a day that combines religious devotion and village joy.

The festival day

The program follows the classic South Tyrolean Kirchtag format. The morning opens with Holy Mass at 10:00 AM, celebrated in the small church of Gschnon. At the end of the religious service, the Festbetrieb begins—the convivial part of the day, enlivened by:

• Live music with typical brass bands and Bohemian-style ensembles (Böhmische) that accompany South Tyrolean village festivals;
• Gastronomic specialties (Köstlichkeiten) of South Tyrolean cuisine, from dumplings (canederli) to meat dishes, traditional desserts, and local wines;
• Moments of gathering and conviviality open to residents and visitors, in a simple and genuine atmosphere.

A mountain Kirchtag in Southern South Tyrol

Located on the eastern slope of the Adige Valley, in the southern wine region of South Tyrol (Südtirols Süden), the hamlet of Gschnon overlooks the vineyards of Montagna, Egna, and Ora from above. Its Kirchtag preserves the intimate and authentic character of small mountain community festivals, far from the major tourist flows. Those who attend discover a little-known corner of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, where religious and popular traditions continue to mark village life just as they have for centuries.
