A month of markets, carols, and performances in the heart of the Castelli Romani

Grottaferrata Christmas is not just a single event, but a widespread program: from December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, through to Epiphany, the Municipality of Grottaferrata and the local Pro Loco fill the town's squares, streets, public library, theaters, and cultural spaces with activities. It is one of the richest Christmas festivals in the Castelli Romani area, located just a few kilometers from Rome and easily accessible from the entire metropolitan area.
The commercial and social heart of the festival is the Christmas market. The most anticipated one is organized by the Pro Loco in Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, traditionally held on December 8th from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, featuring craft stalls, gift ideas, sweets, and cotton candy. In the following weeks, the stalls move along Corso del Popolo and other central locations, with hours covering the entire day. Admission is always free, and the stalls offer local products, handmade items, and regional gastronomic specialties.
The musical program is one of the most carefully curated aspects of Grottaferrata Christmas. Recent editions have featured the Liszt Festival, Christmas concerts in local churches and theaters, roving carols through the town center, and gospel concerts in Piazza Cavour, as well as Christmas cantatas at the Teatro Sacro Cuore and candlelight concerts in cultural venues. Choral festivals bring together various local groups for highly popular collective celebration evenings.
The calendar is designed to be truly intergenerational: mornings and early afternoons are dedicated to the little ones, while evenings feature performances and concerts for adults.
A unique feature of Grottaferrata Christmas is its widespread nature: beyond the historic center, peripheral neighborhoods like Pratone and Colle Sant'Antonio also host musical parades, entertainment, exhibitions, and small markets. This approach brings the celebration directly to the residents' doorsteps, making the festival a true community event supported by local associations, parishes, and neighborhood committees.
On December 31st, Piazza Cavour hosts the New Year's Eve party with live music and a collective toast, one of the most popular moments of the entire program. The cycle concludes on January 6th with events dedicated to Epiphany.
A city in the province of Rome, in the Lazio region, Grottaferrata is best known for the Greek Abbey of San Nilo, a national monument founded in 1004 that still serves as a Byzantine-rite monastic community today. The Christmas season is an excellent opportunity to combine a visit to the abbey and the vineyards of the Castelli Romani with a day at the markets, perhaps accompanied by a stop at the local fraschette taverns to taste porchetta, local cheeses, and wines from the Colli Albani.
The detailed program for Grottaferrata Christmas 2026 is not yet available. The Municipality of Grottaferrata typically publishes the complete Christmas calendar between late November and early December on its official website and the Pro Loco channels. This page will be updated as soon as official dates and the list of events are released.
By car from Rome: Via Tuscolana or Via Anagnina, exit Grottaferrata (approx. 25 km from Rome city center). By train: FL4 line Rome Termini-Frascati, then bus to Grottaferrata. By metro and bus: Metro A to Anagnina, then Cotral bus to Grottaferrata.
Markets, concerts in the square, and children's entertainment are free of charge. The funfair and ice rink require payment for individual attractions.
Weekends in December and December 8th are the busiest days: it is advisable to arrive early and park in areas outside the center. The full program is published annually by the Municipality of Grottaferrata at the end of November.
