The Gries neighborhood festival in Bolzano, featuring music, local cuisine, and community spirit
The Grieser Platzfest, or Gries Square Festival, is a biennial event that breathes life back into the heart of the Gries district, one of the historic neighborhoods of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol. For an entire weekend, Piazza Gries (Grieser Platz) is closed to traffic and returned to its residents—a chance to rediscover how the square changes when it is free from cars, becoming a true urban open-air living room.
The secret of the event lies in its deeply communal nature. The festival is brought to life by a network of about ten local associations: sports clubs, choirs, bands, youth groups, volunteer corps, and cultural organizations. Recurring participants include FC Gries, the St. Augustin parish choir, Bauernjugend Gries, the Volkstanzgruppe Gries, the Jugendclub Jugend Gries, the Männergesangverein choir, the Gries Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Gries Music Band (Bürgerkapelle Gries), and the Bolzano Floriculturists. Each association manages its own stand and brings its own audience, making the square the meeting point for the entire district.
The program traditionally opens on Saturday afternoon with the tapping of the beer keg, a ritual gesture that kicks off the festivities. From that moment on, the square comes alive until late at night with live music, performances by bands, choirs, and local folk groups. On Sunday, the festival continues from the morning with a more family-friendly atmosphere, children's entertainment, and side events. The food stalls offer South Tyrolean culinary specialties, including traditional dishes, beer, and local products.
The Grieser Platzfest has always had a charitable soul: part of the proceeds is donated to charity. A recurring example is the oysters and sparkling wine offered by the Bolzano Floriculturists, with profits going to support local families or organizations in need.
Born in the late 2000s, the festival is biennial and alternates with the Bolzano City Festival (Bozner Stadtfest). After a long break, the event returned in 2023, confirming itself as one of the most cherished appointments for the Gries district. Its importance goes beyond the festival itself: it represents a moment of gathering that strengthens neighborhood ties and shows how a public space can return to being a place of community, even if only for two days.
The thirteenth edition of the Grieser Platzfest was held on the weekend of May 23-24, 2026, in Piazza Gries, Bolzano. For the occasion, the square and the lower section of Corso Libertà, up to Via A. Diaz, were closed to traffic from 6:00 PM on Friday, May 22, until 6:00 AM on Monday, May 25, returning the area entirely to the festival.
About ten associations active in Gries enlivened the square with their food stalls, music, and cultural offerings. The event kicked off on Saturday at 5:00 PM with the traditional tapping of the keg, followed by music and gastronomy. Among the musical protagonists, the Bürgerkapelle Gries, the neighborhood band, was a highlight.
The square remained closed to traffic for the entire weekend. The detailed program of musical moments was provided by the organizing associations and through Bolzano municipal channels.
