Float parades, masks, and festivities through the streets of Gricignano di Aversa
The Gricignano Carnival is the February highlight that transforms Gricignano di Aversa, in the province of Caserta, into a massive open-air stage. For over two weeks, the streets and squares of this town are filled with allegorical floats, masks, confetti, music, and vibrant colors, creating a celebration that involves the entire community. In 2026, the event reaches its 9th edition, cementing its status as one of the most beloved Carnival festivals in the Aversa area.
The Gricignano Carnival is the result of the collective effort of numerous local organizations: the Coriandoli Gricignanesi Association, the Aria Pulita Committee, the Rione Vico Penta, and local dance academies, all under the patronage of the Municipality of Gricignano di Aversa. Each group spends months building their floats and choreographing performances, renewing the bond between the associations and the residents every year. The event is rooted in the carnival tradition of the Atella area, the land of the ancient Fabulae Atellanaeโthe popular farces from which a long-standing local vocation for comic theater and masks descends.
The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical float parades, which travel through the main arteries of the center, from Via Sant'Antonio Abate to Corso Umberto I, arriving at Piazza Municipio and the M. Mazzoni Municipal Park. Alongside the processions, the program features:
In Campania, and particularly in the province of Caserta, Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the local calendar. The Gricignano Carnival fits into this tradition with a widespread format that reaches different neighborhoods, from the NATO area of Piazzetta Sole to the historic center, bringing the festivities close to families. It is an event designed for all ages, combining the playful spirit of Carnival with the value of social cohesion, culminating on Shrove Tuesday with the final parade and a grand closing party.
The 2026 edition, the ninth of the event, enlivened Gricignano di Aversa throughout the month of February with a rich calendar of parades and shows distributed across the town's various neighborhoods, from the historic center to the NATO area, involving schools, associations, and families right up to the final Shrove Tuesday celebration.
The parades and performances take place along the streets of the center of Gricignano di Aversa (Via Sant'Antonio Abate, Corso Umberto I, Via Aversa) and in the main squares: Piazza Municipio, M. Mazzoni Municipal Park, and Piazzetta Sole (NATO area).
Gricignano di Aversa is located in the province of Caserta, just a few kilometers from Aversa. By car, it is accessible via the Asse Mediano and the SS7bis; the Aversa train station is the nearest hub, with regional connections and the Metrocampania NordEst line.
Participation in the parades and events in the squares is free and open to everyone.
