The bonfire that lights up the Carnival of Sant'Antonino di Susa
Some festivals don't need massive billboards to fill a square: all it takes is lighting a bonfire. In Sant'Antonino di Susa, a small town in the Susa Valley in the Province of Turin, the Great Carnival Bonfire is exactly that—the moment the entire village gathers around the fire to celebrate the final days of Carnival. The flames of the pyre, a symbol of rebirth and good omens, transform a cold February evening into a scene of color, warmth, and smiles.
The Carnival bonfire of Sant'Antonino is part of the alpine carnivals of the Susa Valley, an important tradition not just for the valley but for the entire alpine region. Citizens of all ages arrive in the square, many in costume: it is proof that folk roots are still very much alive in this territory. The municipal administration has repeatedly emphasized that the Carnival is not just an occasion for fun, but a true pillar of local identity.
The driving force behind the event is the AIB Volunteer Squad (Forest Firefighters) of Sant'Antonino, who manage the lighting and safety of the pyre with passion and professionalism. Working alongside them are the Pro Loco, the Santa Cecilia Philharmonic Society—which accompanies the evening with band music—and the "La linea d'Ombra" association, together with the municipal administration.
The Great Bonfire is the heart of a wider Carnival that brings the town and neighboring municipalities to life. In the days leading up to it, the grand masked parade takes place, winding through the town streets to Piazza della Pace, featuring a snack for everyone and awards for the most original costumes and the largest group. To prepare, the Pro Loco also organizes the "Mask Workshop", evenings open to adults and children to build floats and costumes together.
It is an authentic, free, and family-friendly festival, far from the major tourist crowds and perfect for those who want to experience Carnival as the people of the Susa Valley have always done: in the square, around the fire, all together.
