The patronal feast of Merì, blending faith, floral displays, and tradition

In the heart of the legendary Campi Milesi, between Milazzo and the promontory of Tindari, the small town of Merì (Province of Messina, Sicily) celebrates its patron saint, Maria SS. Annunziata, with one of the most cherished festivals in the local calendar. Devotion to the Annunziata is twofold: the community honors her on March 25th, for the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, but it is the first Sunday of July that calls the entire town together for the great patronal feast, featuring both religious rites and secular festivities.
The spiritual heart of the event is the Mother Church of Maria SS. Annunziata, one of the first buildings constructed in the center of Merì, featuring a Latin cross plan and an octagonal dome. Inside, it houses the precious Annunciation painting (1603) by the Messinese artist Antonio Catalano. From here begins the solemn procession of the Madonna's statue, which travels through the village streets accompanied by the faithful, the marching band, and local authorities.
Among the most moving moments is the symbolic presentation of the Key of the City to the Madonna: an ancient gesture through which the community entrusts itself and its town to the protection of the patron saint. Along the processional route, one can admire the traditional flower festival (infiorata), with carpets of petals and floral arrangements created by citizens as an homage to the Virgin.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the feast is enriched by a lively secular component. Piazza Umberto I becomes the natural stage for concerts, comedy shows, and musical evenings open to all with free admission. Past editions have featured cabaret artists and musical groups, creating a festive atmosphere that brings together families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns.
Visiting Merì during the patronal feast is also an opportunity to discover a village with a fascinating history: officially founded in 1582 by Baron Don Visconte Rizzo, it preserves Palazzo Morra, declared a national monument in 1953, which hosted Giuseppe Garibaldi on the eve of the Battle of Milazzo. The feast of Maria SS. Annunziata is the perfect gateway to experiencing the authentic soul of this corner of the Messina area.
The calendar for the 2026 edition of the Grand Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Annunziata in Merì has not yet been released. As per tradition, the celebrations take place around the first Sunday of July and include a solemn Mass, the procession of the patron saint's statue, the presentation of the Key of the City, the flower festival, and evening shows in Piazza Umberto I. As soon as the Municipality of Merì and the Maria SS. Annunziata Parish release the official program, this page will be updated with dates, times, and details.
The patronal feast is traditionally held on the first Sunday of July, with celebrations taking place in the preceding days. A second commemoration dedicated to the patron saint falls on March 25th (Solemnity of the Annunciation).
