A 15-kilometre open-water swim in the Cilento Marine Protected Area
Every year in late June, the waters off Castellabate, in the province of Salerno, Campania, become the stage for one of the most challenging long-distance swimming events in Italy: the Gran Fondo Golfo di Castellabate. This 15-kilometre linear race follows the stunning Cilento coastline. It is not a mass-participation event; entries are limited, and the starting line features a select group of specialists, most accompanied by a kayak or support boat for a grueling test of physical and mental endurance.
The route begins at Baia Arena, near Ogliastro Marina, and stretches for 15 km along the coast to the beach of the Lago district in Castellabate. Along the way, swimmers round the headland and the islet of Punta Licosa—one of the most beautiful and well-preserved stretches of the Tyrrhenian coast—and traverse the waters of the Santa Maria di Castellabate Marine Protected Area, characterized by sandy seabeds and shallow reefs. The course requires expert navigation of currents and careful energy management; the maximum time allowed to complete the race is five and a half hours.
The event is part of the Gran Fondo Italia national circuit, which brings together the country's top aquatic marathons. It has long since gained an international reputation, with athletes from Spain, Argentina, and Switzerland joining Italy's best long-distance swimmers in recent years. On the same day, the waters of the Lago district also host the CSI Italian Championship open-water races over shorter distances, turning the weekend into a true gathering for enthusiasts of all ages.
The Gran Fondo effectively kicks off the swimming season in Castellabate, which continues in the following weeks with other events hosted within the Marine Protected Area:
The event is organized by the Circolo Nautico Punta Tresino, part of the Punta Tresino Association, which has spent years promoting water sports in Cilento in collaboration with the Municipality of Castellabate and the Castellabate a Vela association. The goal, as stated by coordinator Giovanni Pisciottano, is to unite sport, territory, and inclusion, using the races as a showcase for a stretch of coast that serves as the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
Even for non-swimmers, the morning of the Gran Fondo is a compelling reason to visit Castellabate. The dawn start at Baia Arena, the support boats trailing the swimmers along the coast, and the finish at Lago beach—where the awards ceremony is held at the Circolo Nautico Punta Tresino—create a unique atmosphere that is both athletic and familial. The surrounding medieval village of Castellabate, the marinas of San Marco and Santa Maria, and the local Cilento cuisine complete the picture of a day that has become a classic of the Salerno summer.
The 2026 fifteen-kilometre race saw Luca Lepore win the men's category, finishing the crossing in 3h11'15", while Laura Volpi took the women's title, arriving in 3h13'45". The group of fifteen athletes left the Bay of Ogliastro Marina at the first light of dawn and reached the beach of the Lago district after swimming along the Marine Protected Area and rounding Punta Licosa.
Alongside the Gran Fondo, Sunday's program included the CSI Italian Championship open-water races over distances of 1.5 km and 3 km, held in front of the Lago district. The event kicked off a particularly busy summer for the Circolo Nautico Punta Tresino, which hosted the FIN National Grand Prix stage and the first round of the UISP Campania Trophy in the following weeks.
