The great bonfire of Mattinata for the Feast of Saint Joseph, blending faith, fire, and tradition
In the heart of the Gargano, in the province of Foggia, the town of Mattinata celebrates Saint Joseph every year with a ritual that has become a symbol of local identity: the Gran Falò di San Giuseppe. On the evening of March 19th, the saint's feast day, a gigantic pyre of wood collected over the previous weeks is erected in the square in front of the Santa Maria della Luce Parish Church and set ablaze in a spectacle that unites faith, fire, and community.
The lighting is not merely a fire: it is an ancient rite of purification, reinterpreted by the Mattinata community in a contemporary light. The highlight is the pyromusical ignition, when the flames rise to the rhythm of music and the blessing of the bonfire marks the start of the festivities. Entire families gather around the fire, enjoying the warmth of the flames and the scent of local products served at the food stalls set up by local businesses.
The religious dimension is complemented by popular traditions: concerts of Apulian music—with the Figli di Puglia band among the protagonists of recent editions—enliven the square until late at night, while the fireworks display that concludes the day illuminates the sky of Mattinata. All this takes place in an atmosphere of joy and conviviality that involves both residents and visitors arriving from all over the Capitanata region.
Born in the early 2000s to revive an ancient custom, the Gran Falò is organized with dedication by the Circolo Ricreativo Culturale Oasis, which has managed the setup since the very first editions. Year after year, the event has grown to become an unmissable appointment on the Gargano calendar, capable of bringing different generations together around the same fire. If you are visiting Puglia in March, the Gran Falò di San Giuseppe in Mattinata is an authentic experience that reveals the truest soul of this village overlooking the Adriatic.
The 2026 edition, the 25th, marked an important milestone: a quarter-century of fire, faith, and tradition in Mattinata. The bonfire was set up in the square of the Santa Maria della Luce Parish Church and lit on the evening of March 19th with the spectacular pyromusical ritual.
The main day combined the religious dimension, with Holy Mass in the parish, and the popular one, with a concert by the Apulian band Figli di Puglia, food stalls from local businesses, and a grand finale of fireworks. A celebratory edition that confirmed the Gran Falò as the identity-defining heart of the Gargano community.
The Gran Falò is lit on the evening of March 19th, the Feast of Saint Joseph. Festivities take place on March 18th and 19th, preceded by a three-day preparation period (triduum).
