About Carnevale Caleno

The Gran Carnevale Caleno is the grand February festival in Sparanise, in the upper Caserta region. It features handmade allegorical floats, masquerade groups, music, and parades that turn the town streets into an open-air theater. Established in the late 1970s, the event reached its 44th edition in 2026, organized through a synergy between Pro Loco Sparanise, Nuova Pro Loco Sparanise, and Sparanise in Festa - Un sorriso per tutti. It is a popular, well-attended event that involves all generations of the local community.

The most anticipated festival of the Sparanise winter

Every year, in the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the center of Sparanise—a town in the province of Caserta, in Campania—undergoes a transformation. Streets and squares become the stage for the Gran Carnevale Caleno, one of the historic carnivals of the upper Caserta area. Parades of allegorical floats, masquerade groups, music, and entertainment enliven the town for several days, drawing crowds from neighboring towns in the Terra di Lavoro region.

Nearly half a century of tradition

The event has its roots in the late 1970s. In 2017, local press celebrated the 40th edition, marking "four decades" of renewed tradition, while February 2026 saw the 44th edition. Along the way, as with many popular festivals, there have been years of pauses and restarts, changes in organizing associations, and new formats, but the core spirit has never broken: the carnival remains the moment when the community comes together and gets involved.

The name of the festival refers to the Agro Caleno, the territory of ancient Cales—now Calvi Risorta—to which Sparanise has historically belonged, alongside towns such as Pignataro Maggiore, Giano Vetusto, and Rocchetta e Croce. It is a strong territorial identity that the event has championed since its inception.

Allegorical floats, the heart of the event

As in any traditional artisan carnival, the floats are the true center of gravity. Their construction occupies volunteers, young people, and enthusiasts for months, involving structures, papier-mâché, colors, and music. The result is a visual narrative of irony, satire, and imagination that parades through the city streets.

  • Allegorical floats created by local associations and groups
  • Masquerade groups and street choreography
  • Music and shows during parades and in the squares
  • Entertainment for children and families, featuring the Carnival King and Queen

The 2026 comeback

The 2026 edition held special significance. In 2025, the Gran Carnevale Caleno did not take place; an administrative issue regarding the municipal call for interest, cancelled on February 11, 2025, prevented the float parade from being set up, reducing the carnival to a few roaming initiatives in the neighborhoods. The 2026 return was therefore experienced as a true collective rebirth, with the ribbon-cutting on February 12 and the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Carnival King and Queen.

Organizers

The 44th edition was born from the synergy of three local associations, a feat that was far from guaranteed after years of tension:

  • Pro Loco Sparanise (President Gennaro Giaccio)
  • Nuova Pro Loco Sparanise APS (President Annibale Arena), which has organized the Gran Carnevale Caleno since 1993
  • Sparanise in Festa - Un sorriso per tutti (President Antonio Ragosta)

The event is held with the support of the Municipality of Sparanise, led by Mayor Fabrizio De Pasquale, with the Department of Entertainment and Culture involved in the institutional coordination of the event.

Sparanise, gateway to the upper Caserta region

With just over seven thousand inhabitants, located about sixty kilometers from Naples and a few minutes from Calvi Risorta, Teano, and Capua, Sparanise is a lowland town that grew around its railway station, inaugurated in 1861. The carnival, along with the patron saint feasts, is the event that fills the center and local businesses more than any other, and it is also the best opportunity to discover this corner of Campania Felix off the beaten tourist path.

What to expect

Those arriving in Sparanise during the carnival days will find an authentic town festival: no paid grandstands or large television-style productions, but a free, public event with families in the streets, children in costume, and floats moving slowly between two rows of spectators. The highlight remains the grand Sunday parade, followed by the grand finale on Shrove Tuesday.

Carnevale Caleno — edition 2026

The 44th edition of the Gran Carnevale Caleno took place in Sparanise from February 12 to 17, 2026, marking the festival's return after a year-long hiatus. Five days of parades, allegorical floats, music, and masks, with the inauguration on Thursday the 12th, the grand parade on Sunday the 15th, and the Shrove Tuesday grand finale on February 17. It was organized for the first time by the three local associations: Pro Loco Sparanise, Nuova Pro Loco Sparanise, and Sparanise in Festa - Un sorriso per tutti.

A rebirth edition

The 44th edition of the Gran Carnevale Caleno was much more than just a festival: after the missed carnival of 2025, the return of the floats to the streets of Sparanise was described by the local press as a collective ritual and a sign of the town's newfound unity. The ribbon-cutting on Thursday, February 12, 2026, officially opened the celebrations with an inaugural ceremony and the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Carnival King and Queen.

The days

The calendar spanned five days—Thursday the 12th, Saturday the 14th, Sunday the 15th, Monday the 16th, and Tuesday the 17th of February—alternating parades, entertainment moments, and activities for young and old. The most anticipated moment arrived on Sunday, February 15, with the grand parade of allegorical floats, the traditional highlight of the event, while Tuesday, February 17, Shrove Tuesday, closed the edition with the grand finale.

The floats and the community

The allegorical floats, the result of months of work and dedication by volunteers, transformed the town center into an urban theater of creativity, irony, and imagination. Beyond the spectacle, the 2026 edition also held strong civic value: the Municipality of Sparanise and the associations insisted on procedural correctness and safety plans, a necessary condition to bring an event of this scale back to the streets.
