Cagli's Renaissance re-enactment: the four districts challenge each other in the living game of the goose at the Sant'Emidio Arena
In the heart of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, nestled in the hills rising towards the Apennines, the Renaissance town of Cagli experiences its most anticipated moment every summer: the Goose Palio. It is one of the most cherished historical re-enactments in the Marche region, capable of transforming the entire city into an open-air stage where the colours, sounds, and atmospheres of the 16th century come alive for two weekends in August.
The protagonists of the Palio are Cagli's four historic districts, each with its own colours and identity:
The districts compete for the banner through an exciting living game of the goose, a human version of the famous board game that has been held since 2002 in the Sant'Emidio Arena, the true "Field of Mars" for the event. The game board consists of 54 squares depicting the arts, crafts, and figures of the Marche Renaissance: the goal is to reach square number 54, which depicts Saint Geronzio, the city's patron saint, with his symbols, the cherub, and the white goose.
The movement of the game pieces is determined by dice rolls and skill contests in which the district representatives compete: horse races, crossbow and archery duels, sack races, and ring toss. Between one square and the next, there are duels and plot twists that can overturn the outcome of the competition until the very last roll, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
The most spectacular moment is the grand historical procession, with over four hundred participants - according to chronicles, up to 450 - in precious 16th-century Renaissance attire, including the Duke of Urbino with the podestà and officials, which winds through the streets of the town centre to the Arena. During the evenings, the town comes alive with the districts' taverns, where you can enjoy handmade pasta, grilled meats, Renaissance desserts, and local wines. The heart of the feast is the tavern in Piazza Niccolò IV, better known as Piazza del Teatro.
The roots of the Palio run deep: as early as 1543, the Cagli historian Antonio Gucci mentioned the game of the goose among the pastimes practiced in Cagli. The modern event was established in 1987 and is traditionally held on the second Sunday of August. Since 2003, the Paliotto, a version for children aged 10 to 14, has also been held. Organized by the Associazione Giochi Storici di Cagli, the Goose Palio is now an unmissable event for those who want to discover the authentic Renaissance tradition of the Municipality of Cagli and the Marche hinterland.
The 40th edition of the Goose Palio of Cagli takes place over the first two weekends of August 2026: Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, then from Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 9. The Palio Competition at the Sant'Emidio Arena is expected on Sunday, August 9, preceded by the grand historical procession in Renaissance costume.
The four districts - Sant'Agostino, Sant'Andrea, Sant'Angelo, and San Francesco - will once again compete in the living game of the goose on the 54 squares of the board, with skill contests, duels, and taverns in the historic centre. Sant'Agostino arrives as the reigning champion after their triumph in the 39th Palio in 2025.
The detailed day-by-day program, with schedules for processions, contests, and shows, will be published by the Associazione Giochi Storici di Cagli in the weeks preceding the event on the official website and social media channels.
The official dates for the 40th edition are confirmed: August 1-2 (first weekend, with the children's Paliotto) and August 7-9, 2026 (second weekend), with the Goose Palio Competition at the Sant'Emidio Arena scheduled for Sunday, August 9.
The detailed day-by-day program - schedules for the historical procession, skill contests (horse races, crossbow, archery, sack race, ring toss), shows, and tavern openings - will be announced by the Associazione Giochi Storici di Cagli in the weeks preceding the event on the official website www.paliodelloca.it and their Facebook page.
Cagli (PU) can be reached by car from the SS3 Flaminia dual carriageway (Cagli exit), about an hour from Pesaro and Urbino. The nearest train stations are Fossombrone-Pergola and Fabriano, which are then connected by local buses.
Entry to the historic centre is free for all days of the event: you can freely watch processions, shows, and experience the atmosphere of the taverns. The only paid event is the Goose Palio Competition in the Sant'Emidio Arena: ticket price is 18 euros, free for children under 6 years old. Tickets are sold at the Pro Loco point in Via Leopardi in the days preceding the competition.
