Classical theatre, music, and shows under the stars in the Roman amphitheatre
The Summer Season at the Roman Theatre of Gubbio is one of Umbria's most established cultural events. Every summer, the ancient Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century BC, one of the best-preserved in Italy, comes alive again as a natural setting for theatrical performances, concerts, and classical representations. The theatre ruins, located just outside the walls of the city of the Ceri, offer a unique backdrop: attending a show here means reliving the original function of the place, built precisely to host audiences.
The programme alternates Greco-Roman theatre, comedies, contemporary prose, concerts, and musical events for all tastes. The review, organised by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Gubbio in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Umbria, gathers about a dozen evenings each year. The season is part of a broader summer programme in Gubbio that also includes events such as the Gubbstock Festival dedicated to emerging bands.
Visiting Gubbio during the Summer Season allows you to combine live culture with the discovery of one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages, famous for the Race of the Ceri and its extraordinary historic centre. The province of Perugia finds one of its most cherished summer cultural events here.
The 65th edition of the Summer Season at the Roman Theatre of Gubbio will take place between July and August 2026, continuing the tradition of an event that has enlivened the summer evenings of the city of the Ceri for decades. As every year, the programme will alternate Greco-Roman theatre, comedies, prose, and concerts, with about ten evenings spread across the two months.
The complete programme, including titles, dates, and companies, is traditionally published by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Gubbio in the weeks preceding the start of the season. For updates, please refer to the official website stagioneestivagubbio.it and the Municipality's channels.
