A week of challenges between districts in the mining village of Cabernardi
The Sulphur Mine Palio of Cabernardi is the great summer festival of Cabernardi, a hamlet in the Municipality of Sassoferrato, in the hinterland of the province of Ancona, in Marche. For a whole week, from the first to the second Sunday in August, the village relives the rhythm that marked its history: that of the sulphur mine which, until its closure in 1959, provided work for over sixteen hundred miners and made this village one of Europe's most important deposits.
The Palio was born in 1999 from the initiative of three young people from the village and has been organized since 2003 by the Sulphur Mine Palio Association. It is not a simple festival: it is a collective re-enactment in which an entire community re-enacts its peasant and working-class identity through games, cuisine, and celebration.
The heart of the Palio is the challenge between the four districts of Cabernardi, each with its own colour rich in meaning:
For a week, the districts compete for the Palio in a series of races that recall the daily life of the village up to the 1950s: tug-of-war, sprints, sack races, pot races, sheet throwing, the miner's cartridge, grape stomping, scythe challenges, and many other tests.
Among the most heartfelt moments is the Mine Crossing, a running race of about ten kilometers on a mixed terrain that crosses the sulphur village. The runners' relay concludes with the handover of the baton to the "miners", who dig in their respective tunnels filled with "ginese": the winner is the one who first manages to extract the sulphur. This is the famous Miner's Challenge, a decisive test that often awards the Palio.
The Palio is also an opportunity to rediscover the history of the mine, discovered in 1886 and managed by Montecatini from 1917, the scene in 1952 of the "Buried Alive" occupation told in Gillo Pontecorvo's film Bread and Sulphur. Today in Cabernardi, you can visit the Archaeological Mining Park, the Sulphur Mine Museum, and the new Pozzo Donegani Path, inaugurated in May 2026.
Every evening, food stalls offer traditional Marche dishes, while dance orchestras, Latin nights, discos for the younger generation, and comedy shows accompany the festival until late at night. An event that combines popular sport, working-class memory, and conviviality in the heart of the Marche Apennines.
In 2026, the Sulphur Mine Palio of Cabernardi celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special edition scheduled from August 2 to 9, following the tradition of holding the festival from the first to the second Sunday in August.
For a whole week, the four districts of Cabernardi — Cabernardi East, Cabernardi West, Doglio, and Felcine — compete for the Palio in events that recall the mining and peasant history of the village. The path towards the anniversary has been accompanied by dedicated initiatives, including the inauguration of the Pozzo Donegani Path in May 2026, with four panoramic benches dedicated to the colours of the districts.
The detailed day-by-day program, with times, competitions, and evening guests, will be published by the Sulphur Mine Palio Association on its official channels in the weeks preceding the event.
