The Passion of Christ comes to life in the historic center with nearly a thousand costumed participants
The Good Friday Via Crucis of Acerra is one of the most intense and widely attended sacred representations in Campania. Every year on Good Friday, the historic center of this town in the Metropolitan City of Naples becomes a grand open-air stage where the Passion and Death of Christ are brought to life. The origins of the event likely date back to the late 19th century, when the Confraternita del Suffragio first staged the Passion. The current form of the procession, however, has been consolidated since the early 1970s.
Before the creation of parishes in 1935, when Acerra only had its Cathedral, it was the Confraternita del Suffragio that organized the ancient Procession of the Mysteries. Since then, the parish community has become co-responsible for the event: preparation takes months and involves the entire town, from the youngest to the oldest. Costumes are crafted and maintained with great care, while catechetical meetings on the Gospels of the Passion guide the participants toward the most anticipated event of the year.
The procession is structured as a series of living tableaux that retrace the fundamental stages of the Gospel narrative: Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the betrayal of Judas, the flagellation, the death sentence, the falls under the cross, the two thieves, and finally the crucifixion. Around a thousand participants in period costumes bring this story to life, while a children's choir accompanies the journey, emphasizing its spiritual dimension.
The climax occurs late in the evening, when the crucifixion scene is performed on the imposing walls of the Castello dei Conti, the ancient baronial manor that dominates the historic center of Acerra. As dusk falls, the image of Christ on the cross against the castle walls evokes deep emotion among those present: it is the moment that encapsulates the entire event, a ritual that weaves together history, popular tradition, religion, folklore, culture, and music. It is an appointment that attracts not only the local community but also worshippers and curious visitors from the neighboring towns of the province of Naples.
In 2026, the Good Friday Via Crucis of Acerra once again renewed its centuries-old ritual. Mayor Tito d'Errico described it as an "intense moment of spiritual recollection and collective participation." Hundreds of participants in period costumes, managed by the Confraternita del Suffragio and the parish community, brought the scenes of the Passion to life along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the children's choir.
