About Good Friday of Vallata

Since 1541, the village of Vallata in Irpinia has relived one of the oldest Passion rites in Southern Italy during Holy Week. On Holy Thursday, the candlelight procession bathes the town in a warm glow; on Good Friday morning, over two hundred participants in Roman centurion armor accompany the bier of the dead Christ, the 'Misteri', and 18th-century canvases, while singers chant the verses of Pietro Metastasio's Passion of Jesus Christ to the slow rhythm of trumpets and drums.

One of the oldest Holy Week rites in Southern Italy

Some processions are meant to be watched, while others are meant to be felt. The Good Friday of Vallata, in the heart of the Irpinian Baronia, belongs to the latter: a ritual that the Municipality of Vallata, in the province of Avellino, Campania, has repeated for nearly five centuries, with local records dating back to 1541. It is one of the oldest and most unique representations of the Passion in Southern Italy, and it bears no trace of a tourist reconstruction: here, the entire village—a little over two thousand inhabitants at an altitude of 870 meters—stages the event itself.

Holy Thursday: the candlelight procession

Holy Week in Vallata begins on Thursday evening, following the Missa in Cena Domini and the traditional foot-washing rite. As darkness falls, the candlelight procession begins, a nocturnal parade of torches that winds through the historic center and completely transforms the village: public lights are dimmed, leaving only the hand-carried fire, the slow pace, and the sound of trumpets and drums to close the evening. It is the most intimate moment of the two days, where devotion takes precedence over spectacle.

Good Friday: two hundred centurions through the village streets

The climax arrives on Good Friday morning, when the procession of the dead Christ sets off at 11:00 AM. About two hundred participants—mostly local youth—parade in the guise of ancient Roman soldiers: two squadrons of centurions, the halberdiers, the Latin Eagle symbol of Rome's power, and the figures of Emperor Caesar and Pilate. The pace is measured, almost military, marked by trumpets and drums. This is no mere folkloric detail: in early April, at an altitude of 870 meters, wearing armor means braving a spring that can still be quite cold in Irpinia.

The route follows the classic path of local devotion: starting from the Mother Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, crossing the main square, winding through the neighborhoods, and returning to the starting point. Behind the centurions, the bier of the dead Christ advances, surrounded by the mayor and the town's doctors, followed by the Madonna Addolorata accompanied by young girls wearing mourning ribbons.

The 'Misteri' and the 18th-century canvases

What sets Vallata apart from other Passion rites is the heritage that parades alongside the participants. Hooded figures carry the Misteri, symbolic objects of the Passion, while ancient 18th-century canvases depicting scenes from the life and death of Christ are displayed along the procession:

  • The entry into Jerusalem
  • The Garden of Gethsemane
  • Peter's betrayal, with the rooster
  • The slap before Caiaphas
  • The trials and the condemnation
  • The ascent to Calvary
  • The crucifixion and the deposition

Oral tradition links the origin of the rite to a local Jewish community converted in 1541: the procession has since served as a public catechism, a story told through images for those who could not read.

The singers and the Passion of Metastasio

The soundtrack is not just any band. The singers of Vallata chant the verses of the Passion of Jesus Christ by Pietro Metastasio, an 18th-century text passed down from generation to generation and sung according to a local tradition that survives only here. The singing, alternating with brass instruments and drums, accompanies the procession for the entire duration of the route and is the reason why many photographers and documentarians return every year.

Vallata, the Baronia, and Irpinia

Vallata is a hillside village in the Baronia, the eastern area of the province of Avellino facing Puglia, a land of wheat, bread, and cheese. The patron saint is San Bartolomeo Apostolo, celebrated on August 24, and the Mother Church dedicated to him preserves altars, a baptismal font, Roman-era artifacts, and a 1627 canvas by Giovanni Lanfranco depicting the saint's martyrdom. For those visiting inland Campania, Good Friday is the best opportunity to understand how much richer and more ancient the region is beyond its coast.

Tips for visitors

The rite is free and takes place entirely outdoors: it is advisable to arrive half an hour before 11:00 AM to find a spot and to bring a jacket, as the morning at this altitude is cool. The procession moves slowly, so it is possible to change your viewing point along the way; the departure from the Mother Church and the passage through the square remain the most evocative moments.

Good Friday of Vallata — edition 2026

In 2026, the centuries-old Good Friday procession of Vallata took place on April 2 and 3. On Thursday, April 2, after the Missa in Cena Domini and the foot-washing rite, the village experienced the candlelight procession at dusk. On Friday, April 3, at 11:00 AM, the procession of the dead Christ departed from the Mother Church with over two hundred participants in Roman centurion armor, the 'Misteri', 18th-century canvases, and the singers of the Passion of Metastasio.

2026 Edition: the rite renewed on April 2 and 3

Holy Week 2026 in Vallata, in the province of Avellino, fell in early April: Thursday, April 2, and Friday, April 3. The calendar brought the rite into a spring that was still cold for the 870 meters of the Irpinian village, a habitual condition for the two hundred young people who wear the centurion armor.

Thursday, April 2: the candlelight procession

The day concluded with the celebration of the Missa in Cena Domini and the foot-washing rite, followed at sunset by the candlelight procession through the streets of the center. The nocturnal parade of torches accompanied the scenes of Christ's capture, condemnation, and flagellation, ending with the sound of trumpets and drums.

Friday, April 3: the procession of the dead Christ

At 11:00 AM, the procession of the dead Christ departed from the Mother Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo: two squadrons of centurions, the Latin Eagle with the halberdiers, the figures of Caesar and Pilate, the hooded figures with the Misteri, the ancient 18th-century canvases, and the singers with the verses of the Passion of Jesus Christ by Pietro Metastasio. The bier of the dead Christ was accompanied by the mayor and the town's doctors, followed by the Addolorata and the young girls with mourning ribbons, along the route that crosses the square and the neighborhoods before returning to the starting point.

Admission and participation

As every year, participation was open and free, with the rite taking place entirely outdoors in the historic center of Vallata. The organization is managed by the Comitato Venerdì Santo di Vallata with the Municipality of Vallata.
