The pulling of the wheat wagons and the procession of the mezzetti in the Irpinian village
On August 15th and 16th, the village of Frigento, perched at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters in the province of Avellino, Campania, experiences its two most intense days of the year. The Feast of the Assumption of Mary and Saint Roch is more than just a patronal festival: it is a ritual through which a peasant community in upper Irpinia gives thanks for the recent harvest, transforming wheat into ornaments, gifts, and prayers.
The gesture at the heart of it all is simple. Once the wheat was harvested, it was customary to set aside a symbolic portion to offer to Saint Roch, the patron saint of the village and protector of the sick. This grain was not offered loose; it was patiently woven, stalk by stalk, like embroidery crafted by ancient hands, and then arranged on wooden wagons pulled by oxen.
On the afternoon of August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, the carri covoni (wheat wagons) gather near the Franciscan convent, next to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio. From there, the tirata (the pulling) begins: the structures, entirely covered in hand-woven wheat stalks and ears, are dragged to the village center by pairs of oxen—brought in specifically from Puglia—or by tractors when animals are unavailable. The procession ends in the square in front of the Church of Purgatorio, where the wagons remain on display as a scenic backdrop for the festivities.
Each wagon is the result of the work of entire neighborhoods: they spend weeks weaving, choosing the design, and mounting decorations on a wooden frame that can reach impressive sizes. When the late afternoon light hits the wheat, the result is exactly what the locals have always said: the village turns to gold.
On August 16th, at 11:00 AM, the solemn procession in honor of Saint Roch takes place. The statue of the saint, covered in gold ex-voto offerings, travels through the village streets accompanied by the mezzetti: cylindrical wooden containers holding about thirty kilos of grain, artistically adorned with woven wheat, colorful ribbons, and flowers. Carrying them in the procession is the most intimate devotional act of the festival, as it literally repeats the offering of the harvest to the saint.
On the eve of the festival, streets and balconies are prepared with lampai, star-shaped decorative artifacts that illuminate the procession route and announce the start of the celebrations.
The devotion of the people of Frigento to Saint Roch dates back to 1860, when the inhabitants, struck by an epidemic, invoked his intercession. Since then, the bond between the saint, the health of the community, and the fertility of the land has remained unbroken: the offered grain is both a thanksgiving for the harvest and a request for protection for the year to come.
The pulling of the wheat wagons in Frigento is not an isolated event. It belongs to the great family of wheat rituals that mark the summer in numerous towns across Irpinia, Sannio, and Molise: from the pulling of the wagon in Fontanarosa to the 'Tirata del Giglio' in Flumeri, entire communities mobilize to build and pull votive machines made of straw and wood. It is a fragile yet vibrant intangible heritage that the Municipality of Frigento and the Pro Loco Frigentina continue to pass down by including it in the Estate Frigentina (Frigento Summer) program.
The festival is free and takes place outdoors along sloping streets: comfortable shoes are recommended. The best time to photograph the wagons is the late afternoon of August 15th, when the grazing light enhances the color of the wheat.
The Feast of the Assumption of Mary and Saint Roch returns on August 15th and 16th, 2026, and is included in the official program of Estate Frigentina 2026 presented by the Municipality of Frigento, in the province of Avellino. The heart of the event remains the traditional parade of wheat wagons and mezzetti, with the offering of grain to Saint Roch.
The two days are part of a particularly busy Ferragosto in Frigento: in the days immediately preceding, the municipal program includes the Organetto Festival at Piano della Croce and inflatables for children at Pila ai Piani, while a treasure hunt through the village streets and a 'white dinner' are scheduled for August 17th. An opportunity to experience the village beyond just the processional moment.
The detailed schedule of liturgical celebrations and evening events will be published by the Municipality of Frigento and the Pro Loco Frigentina in the days leading up to the festival.
By car: From Naples, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then take the SS90 road towards Frigento (about 15 minutes from the junction). From Foggia and Puglia, also exit at Grottaminarda. During the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic: park in the designated areas on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot.
By train and bus: The nearest useful station is Avellino, which is connected by Air Campania buses to the inland Irpinia area. The most convenient solution remains the car.
Admission is free and open to all events. The pulling of the wheat wagons takes place on the afternoon of August 15th, starting from the area of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio; the procession of Saint Roch with the mezzetti starts at 11:00 AM on August 16th.
Frigento offers several farmhouses (agriturismi) and bed and breakfasts; for a wider choice, it is better to look in Grottaminarda, Ariano Irpino, or Avellino. The table is never lacking in inland Irpinian dishes: homemade pasta, grilled meats, local cheeses, and regional wines (Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco di Tufo from nearby areas).
