About Good Friday Francavilla

Every Good Friday, Francavilla al Mare renews one of the most deeply felt religious traditions on the Teatine coast: the Procession of the Dead Christ. Organized by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament, the parade begins in the evening from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and winds through the historic center and the seafront, featuring the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, followed by the symbols of the Passion. A journey of faith, silence, and devotion that unites the entire Francavilla community.

A centuries-old tradition of the Abruzzo Holy Week

The Good Friday Procession in Francavilla al Mare, in the province of Chieti, is one of the most attended rites of Holy Week in Abruzzo. In the heart of this Adriatic town, the community gathers in prayer on Good Friday to accompany the statue of the Dead Christ along a route that connects the upper part of the town to the seafront, amidst lit torches and sacred chants.

The rite and the symbols of the Passion

The procession is preceded at 6:00 PM by the Liturgical Action of the Passion of the Lord, celebrated inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore. Around 8:00 PM, the actual parade begins, with the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows carried on shoulders. They are followed by the traditional symbols of the Passion:

  • the Cross and the winged Angel
  • the Ladder and the Lances
  • the Holy Face
  • the Column of the Flagellation
  • the Stone

Local choirs and musical ensembles accompany the procession, while lit torches and tripods illuminate the path, creating an atmosphere of reflection and popular devotion.

The route between the historic center and the sea

The procession starts from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the upper part of the city, then reaches Largo Porta Ripa and the "Adriatica" State Road 16. From there, the procession descends towards the sea, passing through Viale Nettuno, Piazza Sirena, and Lungomare Kennedy, continues to the Station area, touches the Church of Santa Liberata, and finally climbs back up to Piazza San Franco along Via Duca degli Abruzzi. A route that ideally embraces the two faces of Francavilla al Mare: the ancient village and the seaside resort.

Organization and community

The event is organized by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament in collaboration with local parishes and with the support and patronage of the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare. To allow the procession to take place safely, the Municipality arranges temporary traffic closures along the streets involved every year. The procession represents one of the most touching moments of the Francavilla religious tradition, capable of bringing together believers, confreres, and visitors in the moved silence of Good Friday.
