About Good Friday Procession

The Good Friday Procession is one of the most solemn and evocative events in Savona. On the night before Easter, the large wooden 'casse' (processional statues) of the historic Confraternities โ€“ masterpieces of sacred sculpture โ€“ are carried on shoulders through the streets of the city center, from the Cathedral to Piazza Sisto IV, in front of tens of thousands of spectators. A centuries-old rite of faith and art, in the heart of the Province of Savona.

A centuries-old rite

The Good Friday Procession in Savona is one of the most important religious events in Liguria. Organized by the General Priory of the Confraternities of Savona Centro, it commemorates the Passion of Christ through a solemn procession that crosses the historic center on the night before Easter.

Wooden 'casse', masterpieces of art

The absolute protagonists are the fifteen wooden 'casse' belonging to the city's historic Confraternities: large processional sculptural groups, true works of art, carried on shoulders by the confreres along the route. A unique artistic and devotional heritage, which tells the spiritual story of the city.

The city in silence

The procession starts from the Cathedral and proceeds along Via Gramsci, Via Paleocapa, and Corso Italia to Piazza Sisto IV, accompanied by music and the solemn silence of tens of thousands of spectators who crowd the streets of the center. An intense experience, where faith, art, and popular tradition merge in one of the most heartfelt nights of the Savona year.
