The age-old laurel log ritual that announces Christmas, since 1385
In Pietra Ligure, in the Province of Savona, Confuoco is one of the most ancient and identity-defining traditions. Its origins date back to 1385, the year Pietra Ligure became part of the Republic of Genoa. The ceremony, of deep civic value, renews annually the bond between the citizens and their administrators, in a ritual that announces the arrival of Christmas.
The central moment takes place in Piazza La Pietra, in the historic centre: the 'oiba', the laurel log, is lit with the Light of Peace from Bethlehem. Tradition has it that if the flames rise straight towards the sky, it heralds a positive and fortunate year for the community. An ancient and evocative gesture, full of meaning and hope.
The ceremony is enhanced by the historical procession of the "Jus Tenens" Group, accompanied by the "Guido Moretti 1518" Philharmonic Orchestra, which brings back the medieval atmosphere of the village. In the afternoon, at the Guido Moretti Cinema Theatre, Christmas poems and songs by schoolchildren are presented, followed by the awarding of the 'Pietrese dell'Anno' prize, a recognition for a personality who has honoured the town.
Confuoco is the event that, every December, officially opens Christmas in Pietra Ligure.
For 2026, the Confuoco of Pietra Ligure will be renewed on the Sunday preceding Christmas, in Piazza La Pietra. The ceremony will maintain its traditional structure: the lighting of the 'oiba', the laurel log, with the Light of Peace from Bethlehem, the historical procession of the "Jus Tenens" Group with the "Guido Moretti 1518" Philharmonic Orchestra, and the awarding of the 'Pietrese dell'Anno' prize.
The exact date and schedule will be announced by the Municipality of Pietra Ligure closer to the event.
