About Giulio Neri Competition

Every spring, Torrita di Siena, in the heart of the Sienese Valdichiana, becomes a crossroads for world opera with the Giulio Neri International Opera Singing Competition. Named after the illustrious bass born in the town in 1909, the competition attracts young singers from dozens of countries to the Teatro degli Oscuri, where they are evaluated by a jury of artistic directors and casting managers from the world's most prestigious opera houses. Auditions, the semi-final, and the final concert are open to the public: a rare opportunity to hear the voices that will grace tomorrow's opera stages for free.

An opera competition in the heart of the Sienese Valdichiana

The Giulio Neri International Opera Singing Competition takes place every year in Torrita di Siena, a small town in the Province of Siena, Tuscany, nestled in the landscapes of the Sienese Valdichiana. The venue is the historic Teatro degli Oscuri, overlooking Piazza Matteotti, which for a few days transforms into the stage for a true international vocal marathon.

Who was Giulio Neri

The competition is dedicated to Giulio Neri, born in Torrita di Siena in 1909 and considered one of the greatest basses in the history of opera. Starting from this small Tuscan village, he went on to establish himself on the most prestigious opera stages in the world. In his honor, the most coveted award of the event is the Best Bass Voice Award, which bears his name.

A showcase for young opera talent

Organized by the Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte, the competition has established itself over the years as one of the most anticipated events for those taking their first steps in the world of opera. Each edition brings together dozens, and sometimes over a hundred, singers from different countries: sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones, and basses compete before a jury composed of artistic directors, casting managers, and masters from major Italian and European opera houses and foundations.

How the competition is structured

The days unfold through preliminary auditions, a semi-final, and a final concert, all open to the public. The audience is not just a spectator: they have a say thanks to a specific Audience Award, alongside the awards assigned by the jury and special prizes for the youngest and most promising voices.

Why it is worth attending

  • You can listen to emerging international opera voices live, for free.
  • You can discover an authentic Tuscan village far from the most crowded tourist routes.
  • You can experience the intimate atmosphere of a historic village theater.
  • You can witness the birth of careers that, like Giulio Neri's, can start right here.

For opera enthusiasts and curious travelers in the Valdichiana, the Giulio Neri Competition is a precious event that weaves together high musical culture and the identity of the Sienese territory.
