The international opera competition in Torrita di Siena dedicated to the great Tuscan bass
The Giulio Neri International Opera Singing Competition takes place every year in Torrita di Siena, a small town in the Province of Siena, Tuscany, nestled in the landscapes of the Sienese Valdichiana. The venue is the historic Teatro degli Oscuri, overlooking Piazza Matteotti, which for a few days transforms into the stage for a true international vocal marathon.
The competition is dedicated to Giulio Neri, born in Torrita di Siena in 1909 and considered one of the greatest basses in the history of opera. Starting from this small Tuscan village, he went on to establish himself on the most prestigious opera stages in the world. In his honor, the most coveted award of the event is the Best Bass Voice Award, which bears his name.
Organized by the Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte, the competition has established itself over the years as one of the most anticipated events for those taking their first steps in the world of opera. Each edition brings together dozens, and sometimes over a hundred, singers from different countries: sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones, and basses compete before a jury composed of artistic directors, casting managers, and masters from major Italian and European opera houses and foundations.
The days unfold through preliminary auditions, a semi-final, and a final concert, all open to the public. The audience is not just a spectator: they have a say thanks to a specific Audience Award, alongside the awards assigned by the jury and special prizes for the youngest and most promising voices.
For opera enthusiasts and curious travelers in the Valdichiana, the Giulio Neri Competition is a precious event that weaves together high musical culture and the identity of the Sienese territory.
The 18th edition of the Giulio Neri International Opera Singing Competition recorded a record number of 117 registered singers from 26 countries: never before had so many nationalities been represented in the history of the event. The four days at the Teatro degli Oscuri featured auditions, a semi-final, and the final concert on Sunday, April 19, organized by the Fondazione Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in collaboration with the Agorà Lyric World Competition of Verona.
