The grand gathering of musical bands in the heart of the Vastese region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Gissi City Band Festival is one of the most deeply rooted musical events in the summer of the Vastese, the inland district of Chieti where Gissi stands as one of the main villages. Born in the 1980s following the activity of the Gissi City Band, the festival has grown edition after edition to become a defining moment for the entire community: bands from all over the province of Chieti and Abruzzo arrive to march together through the streets of the historic center, perched on a gypsum ridge nearly five hundred meters above sea level.
Behind the festival lies a long and passionate history. The Gissi City Band, active since 1985 under the direction of maestro Nicola Mariani and part of the Amici della Musica Association, consists of about forty young musicians from Gissi and neighboring towns. Over the decades, the band has represented the province of Chieti in international events, performing in Switzerland, Belgium, France, and even at the European Festival of Folkloric Bands in Budapest. It is from this vitality that the annual festival was born, designed to foster dialogue between local band ensembles and to pass on a popular musical culture that has deep roots in Abruzzo.
The festival follows a well-established ritual. In the late afternoon, the parade of the bands begins through the village streets, with uniforms, instruments, and marches accompanying the procession to the main square. This is followed by greetings and awards for the participating groups, and in the evening, the final concert takes place, with a repertoire ranging from symphonic marches to soundtracks, and from light music to original pieces for bands. All this takes place in a festive atmosphere that involves residents and visitors alike, amidst the lights of the historic center and the flavors of local cuisine, starting with the famous ventricina of the Vastese.
Hosting a band festival is no coincidence for Gissi: this small town in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, has made the band a symbol of its own identity. A significant part of the "Estate Gissana" (Gissi Summer) revolves around the festivalโa calendar of events that enlivens the town during the warm months with music, sports, gastronomy, and traditions. For those looking to discover authentic Abruzzo, far from the most beaten paths, the Band Festival is the ideal opportunity to experience a genuine village celebration where street music remains the protagonist.
In 2026, the historic center of Gissi, in the province of Chieti, is expected to fill with music once again for the customary Gissi City Band Festival, organized by the Amici della Musica Association and the local band. As of today, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the calendar for the Gissi Summer is usually released during the summer months. In line with previous editions, the festival will feature a parade of bands through the village streets, awards for guest groups, and a final concert in the square. Information will be updated as soon as the organizers communicate official dates and details.
The festival is held in the historic center of Gissi (CH), in Abruzzo, with a parade along the village streets and a final concert in the main square.
Gissi can be reached from the A14 motorway, Vasto Sud exit, continuing towards the inland Vastese area; the reference railway station is Vasto-San Salvo, from which you can continue by car or local bus lines.
The event takes place outdoors and is free of charge.
