A scenic walk discovering the hills and castle ruins of Bornate
The Giro del Castello is one of the most cherished summer traditions in Bornate, a bustling village in Serravalle Sesia, located in the heart of the Middle Valsesia in the province of Vercelli (Piedmont). Organized by the Comitato Benefico Bornatese, the event features a guided, non-competitive walk open to everyone, exploring the gentle hills surrounding the village and the remains of its ancient manor.
The central theme of the event is Bornate Castle, of which only the stumps of the perimeter walls remain today, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the confluence of the Sessera and Sesia rivers. The fortification has been documented since 1190, when Vercelli took control of it, and was definitively dismantled in 1557 by Spanish troops during the wars between France and Spain. From this vantage point, the view opens up across the three valleys of the Sesia, Sessera, and Strona: a panorama that makes the climb well worth the effort.
The Giro del Castello is more than just a hike: it is, above all, a moment of celebration for the Bornate community. The day blends nature, local history, and fine food, with gastronomic stops distributed along the route. The start and finish revolve around the Ca' del Lanternon, the village meeting point, while along the way, participants encounter sites dear to the locals, such as the Ca' dal Gira and the Capรจla Capun.
As the name of the organizing committee suggests, the event has a charitable purpose: participation helps support local activities and initiatives. It is a simple and genuine way to spend a late summer Sunday in good company, rediscovering the trails and traditions of an authentic corner of the Valsesia.
The 4th edition of the Giro del Castello returns to Bornate on Sunday, August 23, 2026, organized as always by the Comitato Benefico Bornatese. The morning combines walking, local history, and conviviality on the hills of the Serravalle Sesia hamlet, with a program marked by various stops between the village and the castle ruins.
Mandatory registration by Saturday, August 22. For info and bookings: Municipality of Serravalle Sesia, tel. 0163 450102, or the Facebook page of the Comitato Benefico Bornatese.
