The race that embraces the pastures

The Giir di Mont — "giro dei monti" or "tour of the mountains" in the Premana dialect — is the symbolic skyrunning race of Premana, a wholly mountainous municipality in the province of Lecco nestled in the upper Valvarrone, at the northernmost tip of the Lecco region towards Valtellina. The course forms a loop connecting the village's historic pastures: a challenge that began as a local trial between the mountain huts and grew to become an international event attracting over a thousand athletes from around the world.

Courses for every runner

The event offers multiple routes. The main 32 km course traverses high-altitude pastures with challenging climbs and views stretching across the Orobie Alps and the peaks of Valsassina; the shorter 18 km route allows even those not tackling the longer distance to experience the pastures. Added to these are the Giir di Mont Young, dedicated to younger participants, and the Team di Mont, a team race. A true skyrunning competition, where technique counts as much as stamina.

Premana, capital of knives and mountains

Premana is not just the backdrop for the race: it's a village that has made mountains and work its identity, famous throughout Italy for its production of knives and scissors. The Giir di Mont stems precisely from this deep connection to the land and hard work, and during the race weekend, the entire village mobilizes to welcome athletes and spectators. Race day Sunday has been a media event for years, with live television broadcasts bringing the spectacle of Premana skyrunning across Italy.

Two days of sporting celebration

The program unfolds over two days: Saturday is dedicated to youth races and supporting events, while Sunday features the main race, with thousands of people along the trails and at scenic viewpoints cheering on the runners. The organization is handled by ASP Premana, which renews its commitment each year to keep the event at the forefront of the international skyrunning calendar.
