A walk through the places of "The Betrothed" in Lecco
The Manzonian Walk is one of Lecco's most beloved events: a non-competitive walk that winds through the places that inspired Alessandro Manzoni for his masterpiece, The Betrothed. Lecco, a city on the eastern branch of Lake Como, is indeed the geographical heart of the novel, and walking its paths means reliving the steps of Renzo and Lucia through historic districts, churches, villas, and lake views.
The event offers three itineraries of varying length and difficulty, suitable for every level of fitness:
The start is from Piazzale Meridiana, with gathering in the early morning hours and staggered departures.
What makes the Manzonian Walk unique is its cultural dimension: along the routes, actors and extras present historical re-enactments and theatrical performances in the symbolic places of the novel, transforming the walk into a journey through time. This is why it has been defined as the most artistic walk in Italy.
Organized by Lecchese Turismo Manifestazioni, the Manzonian Walk gathers about four thousand participants each year and represents a fixed autumn event in Lecco, capable of uniting gentle sport, culture, and the enhancement of the landscape of the Province of Lecco and the Lombardy Region.
The 53rd edition of the Manzonian Walk is expected in Lecco in autumn 2026. As is tradition, the non-competitive walk will offer three routes of 5.5 km, 11 km, and 20 km through the symbolic places of "The Betrothed", starting from Piazzale Meridiana.
Along the routes, historical re-enactments and theatrical performances that have made the event famous will return. The exact date of the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers on the official website; traditionally, the event falls on the first or second weekend of October.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the organization closer to the event. The usual structure includes:
The meeting point is at Piazzale Meridiana, in Lecco, reachable by train (Lecco station) and by car from the SS36. It is advisable to arrive with some advance notice for bib collection.
Registration is done online, including via Eventbrite, and at points indicated by the organization. A dedicated app provides navigation and route information.
Wear comfortable trekking shoes and bring water: the longer routes cross panoramic hilly sections overlooking Lake Como.
