Masked parades, dances, and DJ sets in the heart of the iconic Belice city
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, between late February and early March, the Gibellina Carnival fills the streets of this town in the province of Trapani, in western Sicily, with color, music, and masks. Organized by the Municipality of Gibellina in collaboration with local associations, the event spans several days and features a program designed to engage children, teenagers, families, and seniors alike.
The heart of the festivities is the Mask Parade, which winds through the town center to the main squares. The parade primarily features local school students: the youngest children from preschool and primary school lead the morning procession, while middle school students take to the streets in the afternoon. Teachers, parents, and the Gibellina Volleyball Association accompany the processions, which conclude in the square with food stalls and DJ sets.
Gibellina is a unique city: rebuilt after the 1968 Belice earthquake, it is now famous for its extraordinary contemporary art heritage, so much so that it has been designated the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026. It is no surprise, then, that during the Carnival, the children's costumes often reflect the city's iconic monuments, such as the famous Stella (Star) by Pietro Consagra. The Carnival represents a moment of shared celebration where the community gathers in its squares.
In addition to the parades, the program includes dance evenings such as the Grand Carnival Ball, the Masked Party, and the final Grand Gala, featuring ballroom music, group dances, and DJ sets. There is no shortage of events dedicated to children, with games and entertainment, as well as moments of conviviality featuring tastings of local food and wine. The various initiatives take place throughout the town center, including Piazza XV Gennaio, Piazza Municipio, and the San Francesco School gymnasium.
At the moment, the Municipality of Gibellina has not yet published the dates and program for the 2026 Carnival. Following the tradition of previous editions, the festival is expected to take place during the Carnival period, with the customary Mask Parade through the streets of the center, dance evenings, and moments dedicated to children. Detailed information will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Carnival events are held in the center of Gibellina (province of Trapani, Sicily): the parades travel through the city streets to Piazza XV Gennaio and Piazza Municipio, while the dance evenings are held in the San Francesco School gymnasium.
Gibellina can be reached by car via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, taking the Salemi-Gibellina exit. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi; alternatively, you can fly into Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport.
Carnival events are generally free and open to the public.
