The Gorizia azalea garden, between blooms and multimedia paths
The Giardino Viatori was born in the seventies when Luciano "Lucio" Viatori bought a hill on the outskirts of Gorizia, with an extraordinary view of the city, the castle, the Isonzo River, the Karst plateau, and the Prealps. Inheriting his mother's passion for botany, Viatori brought to life a garden inspired by the English landscape style, which over the years became one of the most admired botanical collections in the Northeast. Upon his passing in 2014, the garden was donated to the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia, which assumed its conservation and enhancement.
From March to June, the garden explodes with colour: hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas, collections of lilacs, hydrangeas, spireas, viburnums, osmanthus, peonies, climbing roses, flowering plums and apples, and about a hundred deciduous magnolias, the professor's last great love. The season opens with the spectacular blooming of magnolias and continues with the triumph of azaleas and rhododendrons, in a succession of scenes that change from week to week.
Alongside the plant heritage, the Giardino Viatori offers an innovative experience: the founder's house has been transformed into a multimedia educational space where, using touch screens, augmented reality, and virtual reality stations, Lucio Viatori's vision and the garden's blooms are told. Along the paths, QR codes linked to a mobile app allow visitors to discover plants and stories of the place. Renovation work has also made the garden more accessible to people with disabilities.
Open only by reservation and with guided tours at fixed times, the Giardino Viatori offers an intimate and curated experience, away from the crowds. It is a place to be enjoyed calmly, allowing yourself to be guided along the paths of the Gorizia hill, with views stretching across blooms and cross-border panoramas.
The 2026 season of the Giardino Viatori kicks off on Sunday, March 29, and continues until mid-September, with openings on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. This year again, access is exclusively by reservation, with guided tours at fixed times that accompany visitors in discovering the botanical collections and the multimedia house-museum dedicated to Lucio Viatori.
Special openings are planned for the most spectacular blooms, such as magnolias in March, and on certain spring public holidays. Tours follow morning and afternoon schedules, with additional sessions in the summer months.
Period: from March 29 to mid-September 2026, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
