Arts in nature: land art and performances along the Isonzo River
There is a place, along the course of the Isonzo River, where art grows among the trees and dialogues with water and light: it is the Isonzo Park in Fiumicello, home of the AESON – Arts in Nature festival. Founded in 2008 by the ECOPARK Association, AESON is today one of the most original environmental art experiences in Friuli Venezia Giulia: not just an exhibition, but a research laboratory that uses the river landscape as its stage.
The heart of the festival is land art: every year, new Italian and international artists create site-specific installations that draw from the materials and inspirations of the territory, enriching a collection of dozens of environmental works that can still be visited along the Isonzo. Alongside the installations, the program comes alive with dance and theatre performances, concerts, evening light shows, nature walks, and workshops for all ages.
AESON is much more than a festival: it is a path of artistic and social research that operates at the intersection of art, nature, and community. The project extends far beyond the event days, with spread-out itineraries (the AESON Atlas) that scatter environmental art works throughout the regional territory and into neighboring Slovenia, in a cross-border dialogue that makes this corner of Friuli a cultural crossroads.
During the festival evenings, there are also convivial moments, with catering services offering local zero-kilometre products. Admission is free: an open invitation to everyone to immerse themselves in an experience that combines beauty, environmental awareness, and wonder.
The 2026 edition of AESON revolves around the theme 'Liminal – Thresholds of the Living', a reflection on the threshold between art, nature, and life. In the Isonzo Park, from July 22 to 25, new land art installations, performances, concerts, and light shows take shape. Among the anticipated productions is 'Phoenix – study on rebirth', a performative research by dancer Anna Savanelli and artist Devid Strussiat in collaboration between the Arearea company and AESON projects.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks on the official website. The festival, dedicated to the theme 'Liminal – Thresholds of the Living', typically features: new land art installations by Italian and international artists, dance and theatre performances (including 'Phoenix – study on rebirth' with Anna Savanelli and Devid Strussiat / Arearea company), concerts, evening light shows, nature walks, and workshops for all ages, with zero-kilometre catering.
The Isonzo Park is located in Fiumicello (San Valentino district), reachable from the SS 14; highway exits Palmanova or Villesse (A4).
Free admission. Catering service with zero-kilometre products during the evenings.
Accommodation facilities in Aquileia, Grado, Cervignano, and the Bassa Friulana area.
