About Garnier Festival

Every early August, the uninhabited hamlet of Garnier, perched above Castel del Bosco in the municipality of Roure (Val Chisone, Metropolitan City of Turin), comes to life for a day during the Garnier Festival. Organized by the G.S.R. Castel del Bosco, the event combines Holy Mass at the Maison with the blessing of the bread and a grand barbecue, featuring local toma cheese and seasonal fruit in a corner of the Cottian Alps where mountain traditions still thrive.

A hamlet brought to life for a day

The Garnier Festival is one of those events that truly defines the alpine summer: for just one day, the abandoned hamlet of Garnierโ€”a cluster of stone houses perched above the village of Castel del Bosco, in the municipality of Roureโ€”fills with voices, the scent of grilled meat, and visitors who have hiked up from the surrounding valleys. We are in the heart of the Val Chisone, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, at the foot of the Cottian Alps, in a territory of the Occitan valleys where the very name Roure recalls the oak, a symbol of strength.

Between faith and food: the Maison ritual

The heart of the festival is the Maison, the hamlet's meeting point. The morning begins with Holy Mass at the Maison, during which the Blessed Bread is distributed, following a mountain custom that has always linked the community to its land and its ancestors. Immediately after, the sacred gives way to conviviality: it is time for the Grand Maison Barbecue, served comfortably at the table.

What to eat

The menu is simple and straightforward, as tradition dictates in these valleys: the finest grilled meat served at the table, accompanied by local toma cheese and seasonal fruit. No frills, just the authentic flavors of the Piedmontese mountains, to be enjoyed outdoors with the view of the Garnier Valley before your eyes.

Who organizes it

Behind the festival is the G.S.R. Castel del Bosco, the Sports and Recreation Group that enlivens the entire summer season in the area with a packed calendar of eventsโ€”from flea markets to trial bike competitions, from vertical hikes to autumn festivities. The Garnier Festival is one of the most cherished moments, as it brings life back to a place that remains silent for the rest of the year, guarding the memory of those who once lived and worked up here.

An experience for lovers of the true mountains

More than just a local festival, the Garnier Festival is a small community ritual: you hike up to the hamlet, attend Mass, and sit down to eat together. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Val Chisone, far from the most crowded tourist destinations, and to taste the typical products of Roure in a setting you will not soon forget.
