The fair celebrating the return of the herds from the high pastures in Pontechianale
The Return from the Alps Fair is one of the most cherished autumn events in the upper Varaita Valley. Held in Pontechianale, a small municipality in the Province of Cuneo at the foot of the Monviso massif, it celebrates a fundamental moment in the mountain calendar: the return of shepherds and herds from the high pastures at the end of the summer season. This festival is deeply rooted in Piedmontese pastoral culture and has defined the community's life for over a century.
The fair takes place on the third Sunday of September in the Maddalena hamlet, the municipal seat, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters not far from Lake Castello. The small village comes alive for the entire day, welcoming breeders, exhibitors, and visitors who travel up the valley to witness an authentic, timeless spectacle.
The heart of the event is the livestock exhibition, showcasing animals that have just descended from the high pastures: cattle, sheep, and goats are paraded and presented to the public, often still adorned with their traditional transhumance cowbells. In the afternoon, the breeders' awards ceremony takes place, recognizing the hard work and dedication of the shepherds who spent the summer at high altitude.
The Return from the Alps is more than just a village fair; it is a true re-enactment of the pastoral culture of the Varaita Valley. The descent of the herds marks the end of the summer grazing season and the return of the animals to the valley floor stables: an ancient ritual that is kept alive in Pontechianale thanks to the efforts of the Municipality and the Pro Loco. For those visiting the Piedmontese mountains, it is a chance to discover a genuine tradition and breathe in the authentic atmosphere of the Cuneo mountains.
On Sunday, September 20, 2026, Pontechianale will host a new edition of the Return from the Alps Fair in the Maddalena hamlet. The program includes the livestock exhibition with cattle, sheep, and goats descending from the pastures, the arts, crafts, and antiques market, the afternoon breeders' awards ceremony, and the Pro Loco community lunch. The date is confirmed by the official portal of the Municipality of Pontechianale.
Pontechianale can be reached by car by traveling up the Varaita Valley along the SP8 from Saluzzo, passing through Sampeyre and Casteldelfino until reaching the Maddalena hamlet. The nearest train stations are in Saluzzo or Cuneo, from which you can continue by car or local bus services towards the upper valley.
Admission to the fair is free; the Pro Loco community lunch requires payment.
The event takes place at high altitude: mountain-appropriate clothing is recommended even in good weather. We suggest arriving in the morning to catch the livestock exhibition and taking advantage of the day to explore Lake Castello and the trails around Monviso.
