About Return from the Alps

Every third Sunday of September, the Maddalena hamlet of Pontechianale, in the upper Varaita Valley, celebrates the Return from the Alps: a historic fair marking the return of shepherds and their herds from the Monviso mountain pastures. It is a day of alpine tradition featuring a livestock exhibition of cattle, sheep, and goats, an arts and crafts market, awards for breeders, children's workshops, and a community lunch hosted by the Pro Loco. For over a century, this event has united the mountain community of Cuneo around the work of shepherds and the valley's typical products.

A centuries-old alpine tradition

The Return from the Alps Fair is one of the most cherished autumn events in the upper Varaita Valley. Held in Pontechianale, a small municipality in the Province of Cuneo at the foot of the Monviso massif, it celebrates a fundamental moment in the mountain calendar: the return of shepherds and herds from the high pastures at the end of the summer season. This festival is deeply rooted in Piedmontese pastoral culture and has defined the community's life for over a century.

When and where

The fair takes place on the third Sunday of September in the Maddalena hamlet, the municipal seat, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters not far from Lake Castello. The small village comes alive for the entire day, welcoming breeders, exhibitors, and visitors who travel up the valley to witness an authentic, timeless spectacle.

The livestock exhibition

The heart of the event is the livestock exhibition, showcasing animals that have just descended from the high pastures: cattle, sheep, and goats are paraded and presented to the public, often still adorned with their traditional transhumance cowbells. In the afternoon, the breeders' awards ceremony takes place, recognizing the hard work and dedication of the shepherds who spent the summer at high altitude.

Market, flavors, and activities

  • Arts, crafts, and antiques market along the village streets
  • Stalls featuring typical products of the valley: alpine cheeses, cured meats, and local specialties
  • Creative workshops for children and families
  • Community lunch organized by the Pro Loco, a convivial moment for residents and visitors alike

The significance of the festival

The Return from the Alps is more than just a village fair; it is a true re-enactment of the pastoral culture of the Varaita Valley. The descent of the herds marks the end of the summer grazing season and the return of the animals to the valley floor stables: an ancient ritual that is kept alive in Pontechianale thanks to the efforts of the Municipality and the Pro Loco. For those visiting the Piedmontese mountains, it is a chance to discover a genuine tradition and breathe in the authentic atmosphere of the Cuneo mountains.
