The ephemeral Corpus Domini art carpet, crafted entirely from recycled materials
The Gallicano nel Lazio Flower Festival is one of the most iconic events in the spring calendar of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. During the weekend of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets of the historic center of Gallicano nel Lazio are covered with figurative paintings that, together, form a continuous carpet of about 250 meters, divided into twenty-five compositions handcrafted during the night preceding the procession.
What distinguishes Gallicano from other Italian flower festivals is the choice, now its trademark, to completely forgo flowers. The paintings are composed of sawdust and wood shavings, natural sands, marble dust, colored salt, coffee grounds, and mineral pigments: waste materials, recovered and selected, which allow for a very wide palette of shades without consuming resources. This is the origin of the definition, echoed by local and regional press, of the first entirely sustainable Italian flower festival.
The custom of the flower festival in Gallicano has its roots in the late 19th century, within the broader tradition of Corpus Domini flower festivals widespread across Lazio, Umbria, and Campania, whose devotional origin dates back to the 17th century. The ritual has remained substantially unchanged in its structure: work takes place on Saturday evening and night, the result is admired on Sunday morning, and as the Eucharistic procession passes, the carpet is walked over and finally, by tradition, undone—often by the village children. It is the ephemeral beauty that gives meaning to the entire event.
Each edition is dedicated to a spiritual theme and involves over five hundred people, including volunteers, associations, the parish, artists, and students. Over the years, the event has built collaborations with the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and the RUFA university, and has given life to the educational project School of the Flower Artist, created with the Comprehensive Institute of Gallicano nel Lazio: students' sketches are selected and reproduced among the official paintings, ensuring the technique is passed on to new generations.
Gallicano nel Lazio is a village in the Monti Prenestini area, a short distance from Palestrina and Tivoli: a visit to the Flower Festival can easily be combined with a day exploring the archaeological sites and landscapes of the Aniene valley. During the event days, guided tours of the historic center and exhibitions of preparatory drawings are usually offered, allowing visitors to understand the work behind each painting.
The 2026 edition confirmed the formula that has made Gallicano a unique case in the Italian flower festival scene: no petals, only recycled materials. The chosen theme, «Love and do what you will», was interpreted by artists as an inner journey from fragility to light, and was expressed in twenty-six compositions distributed between Piazza della Rocca and the village streets. The edition's poster was designed by artist Alessia Forconi.
Great emphasis was placed on the School of the Flower Artist project, created with the Comprehensive Institute of Gallicano nel Lazio: four drawings made by students were included among the official paintings. The event was organized by the Infiorata Volunteer Group Committee with the patronage of the Municipality and the collaboration of the Parish of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, and the RUFA university.
By car: from Rome, take the A24 motorway, exit at Tivoli, or take the Casilina/SS155 road towards Palestrina; the village is about 35 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (Rome's ring road). By train: Zagarolo or Palestrina station on the Rome-Cassino line, then take the Cotral bus to Gallicano nel Lazio.
Access to the Flower Festival is free. The paintings are created on Saturday evening and night and are visible on Sunday morning until the Corpus Domini procession passes.
The streets of the historic center are closed to traffic: it is advisable to park outside the village and proceed on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the uphill cobblestone streets.
