Atmosfere Sonore is a chamber music festival held in Monte Porzio Catone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio, within one of the most famous historic residences of the Castelli Romani: Villa Mondragone, located at Via Frascati 51. The subtitle chosen by the organizers—«a series of encounters blending music, spoken word, and song»—perfectly captures the format: these are not mere concerts, but artistic conversations where musical performance alternates with spoken narrative, allowing even those new to concert halls to engage with the repertoire with ease.

The project and its creators

The festival is a collaboration between the Music Theatre International (M.Th.I.) ETS association and the Il Ventaglio association, with the support of the Villa Mondragone management. The project consists of four stages, two in spring and two in autumn, conceived as intimate gatherings rather than large-scale events. The audience is guided along a journey through the atmospheres of Western music from the Classical period to the late 19th century, in a constant dialogue between instruments, song, and storytelling.

The repertoire

The program blends beloved classics with lesser-known gems: Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, as well as Martucci, Respighi, and Saint-Saëns. The selection favors chamber ensembles—cello and piano, violin and piano, baritone with piano and harpsichord—that naturally suit the acoustics and proportions of the villa's historic rooms.

Why Villa Mondragone

Built starting in the 16th century on the slopes of the Alban Hills, Villa Mondragone is best known as the site where the bull introducing the Gregorian calendar was promulgated in 1582. Today, it serves as a representative venue and congress center for the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Its terrace, overlooking the Roman countryside with Rome on the horizon, remains one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Castelli Romani. Listening to a quartet or a chamber duo in this setting means combining a musical experience with the visit of a monument.

A Sunday morning appointment

All events take place on Sundays at 11:30 AM, an unusual and delightful format: the concert ends before lunch, leaving the afternoon free for a stroll through the village of Monte Porzio Catone, a visit to local wineries, or a tour of Frascati, Grottaferrata, and Monte Compatri. Each event also includes a welcome reception with light refreshments before the performance.
