About Atmosfere Sonore

In Monte Porzio Catone, nestled in the heart of the Castelli Romani, the Atmosfere Sonore festival brings world-class chamber music to the historic halls of Villa Mondragone. Four Sunday events—two in spring and two in autumn—are designed as intimate artistic conversations where instruments, voice, and narrative dialogue through a repertoire spanning from the Classical era to the late 19th century. Admission is by voluntary donation.

A musical salon inside Villa Mondragone

Atmosfere Sonore is a chamber music festival held in Monte Porzio Catone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio, within one of the most famous historic residences of the Castelli Romani: Villa Mondragone, located at Via Frascati 51. The subtitle chosen by the organizers—«a series of encounters blending music, spoken word, and song»—perfectly captures the format: these are not mere concerts, but artistic conversations where musical performance alternates with spoken narrative, allowing even those new to concert halls to engage with the repertoire with ease.

The project and its creators

The festival is a collaboration between the Music Theatre International (M.Th.I.) ETS association and the Il Ventaglio association, with the support of the Villa Mondragone management. The project consists of four stages, two in spring and two in autumn, conceived as intimate gatherings rather than large-scale events. The audience is guided along a journey through the atmospheres of Western music from the Classical period to the late 19th century, in a constant dialogue between instruments, song, and storytelling.

The repertoire

The program blends beloved classics with lesser-known gems: Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, as well as Martucci, Respighi, and Saint-Saëns. The selection favors chamber ensembles—cello and piano, violin and piano, baritone with piano and harpsichord—that naturally suit the acoustics and proportions of the villa's historic rooms.

Why Villa Mondragone

Built starting in the 16th century on the slopes of the Alban Hills, Villa Mondragone is best known as the site where the bull introducing the Gregorian calendar was promulgated in 1582. Today, it serves as a representative venue and congress center for the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Its terrace, overlooking the Roman countryside with Rome on the horizon, remains one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Castelli Romani. Listening to a quartet or a chamber duo in this setting means combining a musical experience with the visit of a monument.

A Sunday morning appointment

All events take place on Sundays at 11:30 AM, an unusual and delightful format: the concert ends before lunch, leaving the afternoon free for a stroll through the village of Monte Porzio Catone, a visit to local wineries, or a tour of Frascati, Grottaferrata, and Monte Compatri. Each event also includes a welcome reception with light refreshments before the performance.

Admission and the spirit of the festival

  • Voluntary donation: no tickets are sold; you support the project voluntarily.
  • Reservations recommended, given the limited capacity of the halls.
  • Ample free parking inside the property.
  • Accessible format, suitable even for those approaching classical music for the first time.

Part of the Castelli Romani calendar

Atmosfere Sonore is part of the rich cultural program that enlivens Monte Porzio Catone and the Castelli Romani throughout the year, featuring wine festivals, theater seasons, and park concerts. Unlike large public events, the scale here is intentionally small and the listening experience is intimate: it is a proposal for those seeking musical quality and direct contact with the performers, just a few kilometers from the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

Atmosfere Sonore — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Atmosfere Sonore offers four Sunday encounters at Villa Mondragone, in Monte Porzio Catone: two in spring and two in autumn, always at 11:30 AM. Admission by voluntary donation.

Atmosfere Sonore 2026

The 2026 edition of the festival, curated by M.Th.I. ETS and the Il Ventaglio association, takes place in the historic halls of Villa Mondragone. Four events spread throughout the year, all on Sunday mornings at 11:30 AM, designed as artistic conversations between music and words.

The common thread is an emotional journey starting from the Viennese Classical period and reaching the late 19th century, alternating chamber duos, song, and narrative. Each meeting is preceded by a welcome reception, and access is by voluntary donation: a formula that makes chamber music accessible to a wide audience, even those who do not usually frequent concert halls.
