The Cave Peace Palio

The Cave Peace Palio is the premier historical event in the town of Cave, a village in the Prenestini Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region. Organized since 1996 by the Association for the Historical Re-enactment of the 1557 Treaty of Cave, the event commemorates one of the most significant diplomatic episodes of 16th-century European history every year during the weekend around September 13th and 14th.

The 1557 Peace Treaty

It was September 14, 1557, when the peace that ended the so-called War of the Countryside—also remembered as the Salt War—was signed at Palazzo Leoncelli in Cave. This conflict had pitted the Papal States of Pope Paul IV Carafa against the Spain of Philip II. Cave, as neutral territory, became the ideal venue for the negotiations. That agreement laid the diplomatic foundations that, a few years later, would lead to the famous Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, reshaping the political balance of Renaissance Europe.

The Seven Districts

At the heart of the event are the seven historic districts of Cave, which compete every year for the Palio banner. Hundreds of costumed participants retrace the same paths and reinterpret the same events that led to the signing of the peace in 1557, in a evocative blend of past and present.

Program and Atmosphere

The re-enactment begins with the inaugural ceremony and the oath of the archers, crossbowmen, and players, followed by the unveiling of the Palio banner. The most anticipated moment is the grand historical pageant, featuring over three hundred participants including ladies, knights, men-at-arms, and commoners parading through the festively decorated streets of the village, accompanied by drums, clarions, and banners. The event also includes guided tours of the town, flag-waver and musketeer performances, and, above all, the traditional games and tournaments between the districts hosted in the municipal amphitheater, where the final victory is decided.

More than just a costume reconstruction, the Cave Peace Palio is a moment of strong community identity: it involves entire families, young and old, and keeps alive the memory of an event that speaks of diplomacy and reconciliation.
