The historic challenge between the four districts of Galatone in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Galatone Contrade Palio is one of the most deeply felt historical re-enactments in lower Salento. Every year, the town of Galatone, in the province of Lecce, is ideally divided into its four districts—Cappuccini (yellow), Castello (red), Pommo (blue), and Vasce (green)—which return to compete for an entire day in a series of spectacular medieval-inspired challenges. The prize is the Gonfalone, the banner that crowns the winning district and fuels a rivalry as intense as it is lighthearted among the town's neighborhoods.
Each district fields its own champions: seven soldiers and one knight who test their strength, courage, and dexterity. The program of challenges includes tug-of-war, the sled pull, an obstacle course, launching fireballs with catapults, archery, javelin throwing, the forest game, the greasy pole, and the final knights' joust, the most anticipated moment of the event. The competitions take place inside the "Gigi Rizzo" Municipal Stadium, transformed for the occasion into a grand tournament field before a large audience.
The day opens with an impressive historical pageant in period costume, which starts from the town center and winds through the streets and squares before reaching the stadium. Ladies, knights, men-at-arms, flag-wavers, and musicians parade: the local Galatone districts are joined by numerous guest groups from other parts of Puglia and Campania, totaling well over two hundred performers. The pageant is an integral part of the show and recreates the lavish atmosphere of medieval re-enactments in Southern Italy.
The event is entirely organized by the CREATTIVAmens Association of Galatone and was conceived by Giuseppe Manisco, a local citizen dedicated to the social and cultural growth of the town. Born as a neighborhood festival, the Palio has grown over the years to become one of the defining events of the Galatone summer, capable of involving entire families in the preparation of costumes, teams, and sets. It is a free, participatory event that brings together sport, theater, tradition, and a sense of belonging, calling the Salento town to rally around its districts every year.
At the moment, the CREATTIVAmens Association has not yet announced the date and program for the 2026 edition of the Galatone Contrade Palio. Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect the return of the historical costume pageant and the competitions between the four districts—from tug-of-war and archery to the knights' joust—at the "Gigi Rizzo" Municipal Stadium. Details regarding the date, times, and performers will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Palio competitions take place at the "Gigi Rizzo" Municipal Stadium in Galatone (LE), in the Salento region. The historical pageant that precedes the challenge starts from the town center and crosses the streets and squares of the village.
The event is traditionally held between late summer and early September. The historical pageant reaches the stadium in the early evening, and the competition between the districts begins at sunset.
The event is organized by the CREATTIVAmens Association and is intended as a popular festival open to the entire community. For updated dates, times, and details, it is best to follow the channels of the association and the Municipality of Galatone.
Galatone is located in the province of Lecce, in central Salento, a short distance from Nardò and Gallipoli. It is accessible by car via the Lecce–Gallipoli expressway and has a train station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line.
