About Fuochi nella Notte

Every year, around April 25th, Genazzano lights its bonfires and becomes the headquarters of Lazio's independent music scene. Fuochi nella Notte weaves together the Liberation Day anniversary, the ancient tradition of the San Marco Bonfires, and a live program dedicated to emerging artists, all set among fraschette taverns, tuff caves transformed into exhibition spaces, and town squares open to everyone, always with free admission.

A festival born from fire and memory

Fuochi nella Notte is one of the longest-running independent music festivals in Lazio: for over twenty years, it has brought the village of Genazzano, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, to life during the days surrounding April 25th. The concept is simple yet powerful: to unite the Liberation anniversary, a centuries-old folk tradition, and an emerging music scene that rarely finds such welcoming stages. The organization is handled by the APS Saltatempo association together with Radio Underground, historic pillars of the cultural scene in the Prenestini area.

The San Marco Bonfires, a tradition since 1467

The symbolic heart of the event is the San Marco Bonfires, a custom documented in Genazzano since 1467: wood piles were lit along the village streets to warm and welcome pilgrims on their way to the sanctuary. Even today, dozens of bonfires are lit at dusk in the historic center, giving the uphill streets an atmosphere that is at once ritualistic, convivial, and deeply rooted in local identity. Around the fires, fraschette—temporary taverns—open their doors, serving wine from the Castelli and Prenestini hills alongside traditional Lazio dishes.

The music: emerging artists, not extras

The live program is the reason the festival is followed far beyond the municipal borders. The Piazza San Giovanni stage hosts a packed day of concerts—often eight or nine acts on the bill from early afternoon until night—with an artistic direction ranging from punk to singer-songwriter, and from electronic to rock-blues. There are no chart-topping headliners: the declared choice is to give space to emerging bands and soloists from the Roman and national scene, with a level of curation that has made Fuochi nella Notte a small observatory of the Italian independent scene.

Rupestra: art descends into the caves

Starting with the 2026 edition, the festival runs in parallel with Rupestra, a widespread exhibition that brings the works of about thirty students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome into the tuff caves carved beneath the village. It is an operation that reactivates an underground heritage that would otherwise be invisible, accompanied by meetings on the regeneration of these spaces. Genazzano, after all, has an ancient relationship with contemporary art: here, between the seventies and eighties, the critic Achille Bonito Oliva signed some of his most famous curatorial experiences, linking the town to the Transavanguardia movement.

A village to explore on foot

Genazzano is worth a visit even when the festival is over. The Colonna Castle dominates the town, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries, and the so-called Bramante Nymphaeum, at the foot of the village, remains one of the most fascinating enigmas of Renaissance architecture in Lazio. During the festival, all of this is explored on foot, between a bonfire and a concert, in a day that blends slow tourism, civil memory, and entertainment.

Why go

  • Completely free admission to all concerts and exhibitions.
  • A musical program built on emerging artists, not the usual suspects.
  • An authentic folk tradition, the bonfires, which is not a tourist reconstruction but a living practice.
  • Local food and wine in the fraschette, at popular prices.
  • Easily accessible from Rome, less than an hour's drive away.

It is one of those events that perfectly explains what a village festival can be when it stops being just a food fair: serious music, contemporary art, good food, and a fire burning in the middle of the street.

Fuochi nella Notte — edition 2026

The 24th edition of Fuochi nella Notte expanded to ten days, from April 24 to May 3, 2026, adding the widespread Rupestra exhibition in the tuff caves, a meeting on the regeneration of underground spaces, and the honorary citizenship ceremony for art critic Achille Bonito Oliva to the usual April 25th concert marathon in Piazza San Giovanni. Free admission to all events.

A ten-day edition

In 2026, Fuochi nella Notte reached its twenty-fourth edition by expanding its format: no longer just a long weekend but ten days, from April 24 to May 3, with Genazzano transformed into a continuous path between squares, fraschette, and caves.

The bonfires and the opening

Friday, April 24 opened at 6:00 PM with the fraschette and the inauguration of the Rupestra exhibition; at 9:00 PM, the San Marco Bonfires were lit along the streets of the historic center.

April 25th in the square

Saturday, April 25, the main day, began at 1:00 PM with the Liberation Lunch and continued from 3:00 PM until late at night with eight live projects in Piazza San Giovanni.

The May tail

On May 2, a roundtable on the regeneration of the caves, sponsored by IN/Arch Lazio, and the closing DJ set; on May 3, the conferment of honorary citizenship to Achille Bonito Oliva, who linked his name to Genazzano in the seventies and eighties.
