About Genazzano Summer

Genazzano Summer, also known as Estate Genazzanese, is the summer festival promoted by the Municipality of Genazzano, a village in the Colli Prenestini hills just outside Rome. From July to August, the historic center, its squares, and the grounds at the foot of Castello Colonna host live music nights, DJ sets, street food, local products, stargazing, street performers, and traditional folk events. It is a calendar designed for both residents and visitors, with most events being free and held outdoors.

A summer spread throughout the Colli Prenestini village

Genazzano Summer โ€” often referred to as Estate Genazzanese โ€” is not a single-themed festival, but the summer calendar through which the Municipality of Genazzano brings the town to life during July and August. Genazzano is located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Colli Prenestini, in Lazio: a medieval village just over forty kilometers from the capital, dominated by the famous Castello Colonna and known for the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.

The format is typical of summer in small Lazio towns: frequent evenings, often with free admission, spread across the main square, the streets of the historic center, and the green spaces at the foot of the castle. The administration's stated goal is to engage citizens and visitors with music, entertainment, gastronomy, and tradition.

What to expect in the program

The program changes from year to year, but some types of evenings return regularly:

  • Live music and DJ sets, with nights dedicated to the greatest hits of the sixties, seventies, and eighties, and space for dancing in the square;
  • Street food and local products from the Prenestini area, with stalls set up during the main evenings;
  • Street performers and roving entertainment along the streets of the center;
  • Stargazing with telescopes, offered during the nights of August;
  • Events for families and children, workshops, and outdoor activities.

The calendar of Genazzano festivities

The village's summer intertwines with historical events organized by the Pro Loco Genazzano and local brotherhoods. On the first Sunday of July, the Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated with the spectacular Infiorata (flower festival) and a solemn procession: the streets of the center are covered with carpets of petals created during the so-called "Colorful Night," and the religious pageant then crosses the completed floral works. In July, the Feast of Saint Christina and Ninfeolive also take place, while August 10th is traditionally dedicated to Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars), the night of Saint Lawrence dedicated to wine and sky-watching.

Castello Colonna, the heart of the scene

Many summer events revolve around Castello Colonna, a medieval fortress remodeled in the Renaissance era that dominates the town and now houses exhibition and cultural spaces. The complex, along with the Infiorata Museum, remains open for visits during the festival weekends: a combination that allows one to pair a visit to the heritage site with an evening in the square.

Atmosphere

Those arriving from Rome will find a village-scale summer here: no massive stages or international names, but a slow rhythm, outdoor tables, the municipal band, uphill alleys, and a view over the Sacco Valley. It is an excellent opportunity to discover a village that, outside of mass tourism circuits, preserves an intact medieval urban fabric and a strong community identity.

2026 Edition

At the time of verification (July 2026), the Municipality of Genazzano has not yet published the full 2026 summer calendar online: the last official poster available on the institutional website is for the 2025 edition. However, the traditional events of the Genazzano calendar โ€” the Sacred Heart Infiorata, Saint Christina, Ninfeolive, and Calici di Stelle โ€” are regularly scheduled. It is recommended to check the Municipality and Pro Loco channels for updated dates.
