The spring concert of the Postal brass band
The Frühjahrskonzert der Musikkapelle Burgstall is the annual concert with which the brass band (Musikkapelle) of Postal/Burgstall kicks off the spring season. The event is traditionally held on Palm Sunday at the prestigious Kursaal in Merano, the Art Nouveau concert hall overlooking the Passirio river in the autonomous province of Bolzano (South Tyrol/Südtirol).
As in most South Tyrolean villages, the Musikkapelle is an institution deeply embedded in the life of the municipality of Postal: it accompanies processions, religious and civil ceremonies, and local village festivals. The first records of a brass band in Burgstall date back to 1870, while the current ensemble was refounded in 1979 by a group of musicians. Today, the band boasts over fifty active members and is supported by the JUKAB youth orchestra, established in 1998 to introduce younger generations to music.
The band is conducted by Kapellmeister Joachim Unterholzner, who has been leading the ensemble since 1994. The spring concert is the moment when the Musikkapelle presents itself to the public in a purely concert setting, with a program carefully prepared over the winter months. The repertoire is designed for a broad audience: alongside traditional band music and marches, it features modern symphonic wind pieces and arrangements of well-known film scores.
The choice of the Kursaal in Merano provides an exceptional setting for the evening: built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is one of the symbols of Merano's Habsburg-era resort glory and remains one of the most elegant concert halls in South Tyrol today. Many bands from the Burgraviato area hold their spring concerts here, in a calendar that spans the entire season.
Located in the Adige Valley just a few kilometers from Merano, the village of Postal is a stop in the South Tyrolean Burgraviato, a land of apple orchards, vineyards, and a strong musical identity. Attending the band's spring concert is an opportunity to experience firsthand the community life and rich brass band culture that characterize the villages of South Tyrol.
The 2026 spring concert of the Musikkapelle Burgstall was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Palm Sunday, starting at 7:00 PM at the Kursaal in Merano.
Under the direction of Kapellmeister Joachim Unterholzner, the brass band of Postal/Burgstall presented its traditional spring program, which every year alternates marches and classical band music with modern symphonic wind pieces and arrangements of famous film scores.
