Italy's most curious historical tournament: a wheelbarrow race with frogs between the seven districts of Fermignano
In the heart of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region, the Palio della Rana is one of the most unique and entertaining historical reenactments in Italy. For three days, the historic center of Fermignano, the town that was home to the Renaissance architect Donato Bramante, transforms into a grand open-air stage with costume parades, flag-wavers, drummers, taverns, and artisan markets. But the most anticipated moment remains its signature event: the frog wheelbarrow race.
The heart of the event is the competition between the seven districts of Fermignano โ Ca' L'Agostina, Calpino, La Pieve, La Torre, San Lazzaro, San Silvestro, and Santa Barbara. Each district fields four competitors who, in turn, push a wheelbarrow on which a live frog is placed, covering a course of about 170 meters along Via Martiri della Libertร to Piazza Garibaldi. The challenge lies entirely in balance: you must arrive first without the frog jumping out, which sometimes chooses freedom and sometimes gets carried away by the thrill of speed. The tournament is divided into elimination heats, semifinals, and a grand final that determines the winning district.
The frog and the wheelbarrow are not chosen by chance: the frog, a symbol of marshy areas and fields, represents the connection to the land and to a past of agricultural work and ingenuity, while the wheelbarrow recalls the daily tools of farm work. The reenactment is rooted in the history of Fermignano, an ancient castello (fortified town) long dependent on the government of Urbino, a condition that weighed heavily on the citizens who desired autonomy. The historical parade, with about 300 participants in Renaissance costumes, evokes that past, accompanied by archers, ladies, knights, and the evocative scene of the arrival of the Ducal Court.
In addition to the Palio, the program offers numerous attractions: the Historical Archery Tournament, traditional wooden games, the "Giochi dei Putti" for children, acrobat and theatrical fencing performances, and "Il Piatto del Palio" (The Palio Dish), a gastronomic challenge between the seven districts organized in collaboration with Slow Food Urbino. The district taverns liven up the evenings with traditional Marche dishes, while the grand fireworks display of the "Incendio della Torre e del Ponte" (Burning of the Tower and Bridge) concludes the event with fire and lights over the Metauro River bridge.
The 2026 edition, the 60th, represented an important milestone for Fermignano and the organizing Pro Loco. Three days of celebration animated the historic center with costume parades, tournaments, markets, and gastronomy, culminating in the frog wheelbarrow race between the seven districts: Ca L'Agostina, Calpino, La Pieve, La Torre, San Lazzaro, San Silvestro, and Santa Barbara.
By car: Fermignano is accessible from the Fano-Grosseto highway (SS73 bis), Fermignano exit, about 5 km from Urbino. By train: Fermignano station is on the Fano-Urbino line (limited service); alternatively, Pesaro station on the Adriatic line and then by bus. By plane: Ancona-Falconara and Rimini airports.
Admission to the streets and squares of the event is free. The district taverns offer food and drinks for a fee.
Arrive early on Sunday to secure a good spot along the race route and to watch the historical parade. Wear comfortable shoes and don't miss the evening fireworks display.
