The medieval historical reenactment of Piandimeleto: costume parades, archery contest, and the Castle in flames
In the heart of the Montefeltro hinterland, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, the small village of Piandimeleto holds one of the most fascinating events of the Marche summer: the Palio dei Conti Oliva. For an entire weekend, usually the last in July, the streets of the historic center and its imposing castle dress up in period attire and bring back to life the court of the noble Oliva family, who ruled this corner of the Marche for centuries.
The event is rooted in the history of the Castello dei Conti Oliva, a fortress that dominates the village and was the residence of the ancient family. The reenactment celebrates the splendor of the medieval and Renaissance court, when the local lords welcomed knights returning from battles with sumptuous banquets, shows, and archery competitions. Among the most recalled episodes is the wedding between Count Ugolino Oliva and the noblewoman Alessandra Gonzaga, a symbol of the ties between the great families of central-northern Italy. The first edition of the Palio dates back to 1983, the result of the local community's passion for its history.
The village of Piandimeleto is divided into four districts (rioni), which compete for the Palio with pride and a sense of belonging:
The highlight is the archery contest between the archers of the districts, which takes place on one of the evenings of the event and determines the winning district. The victory is celebrated with the evocative fireworks display of the Castle in flames, which illuminates the fortress and creates a magical atmosphere for the entire village.
In addition to the competition, the Palio dei Conti Oliva offers a program rich in attractions: the historical parade with hundreds of costumed figures, ladies, knights, drummers, and musicians; performances by flag wavers, fire-eaters, jugglers, and falconers; storytelling and medieval encampments. Along the streets, taverns open up, where you can taste dishes inspired by period cuisine, including soups, spiced meats, focaccias, and rustic desserts accompanied by wine. There is also an artisan market, food stalls, and activities for children, making the festival suitable for families and visitors of all ages.
Recognized as one of the official historical reenactments of the Marche Region, the Palio dei Conti Oliva is more than just a festival: it is the way an entire community tells its identity. Visiting Piandimeleto during the Palio means immersing yourself in an authentic and popular Middle Ages, amidst the hills and castles of Montefeltro, one of the most beautiful and least-known areas of the Marche hinterland.
The Palio dei Conti Oliva 2026 celebrates its 43rd edition from July 24th to 26th in the historic center of Piandimeleto, dominated by the castle of the Oliva family.
This year again, the village hosts the historical parade with costumed figures, performances by flag wavers, musicians, fire-eaters, and falconers, taverns with traditional medieval dishes, and an artisan market. The most anticipated moment remains the archery contest between the districts, followed by the fireworks display of the Castle in flames in honor of the winning district.
The detailed program with the daily schedules will be published by Pro Loco Piandimeleto closer to the event on the official website and social media channels.
