About Montegridolfo Liberata

For three days, the medieval village of Montegridolfo, in the province of Rimini, travels back in time to the summer of 1944 with La Montegridolfo Liberata, one of the most important historical re-enactments in Italy dedicated to World War II and the Gothic Line. British and German military encampments, vintage vehicles, re-enactors in uniform, faithfully reconstructed battles, a functioning 1940s thresher, craft workshops, conferences, swing music, and traditional gastronomy transform the town into an open-air museum. Admission is free.

A Village in Valconca Telling the Story of the Gothic Line

Perched on the hills bordering Emilia-Romagna and Marche, the medieval village of Montegridolfo (Province of Rimini) is one of the symbolic locations of the Gothic Line, the German defensive system that split the Italian peninsula in two in the summer of 1944. It was here, in the days between August and September 1944, that Allied troops fought to break through the Nazi-fascist defenses along the Valconca. La Montegridolfo Liberata was created to preserve this memory and keep it alive, becoming over the years the most important re-enactment event in Italy focused specifically on the Gothic Line.

An Open-Air Museum

For three days, the entire village becomes an immersive historical set, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Hundreds of volunteers, re-enactors, scholars, and local associations faithfully reconstruct the atmosphere of the 1940s. Among the streets and walls of the town, you will find:

  • Faithfully reconstructed military encampments: the camp of the British battalion (1/4 Hampshire) and the German kommandantur, with tents, positions, and period vehicles and weaponry;
  • Historic vehicles and figures in British and German uniforms animating scenes of military life;
  • A functioning original 1940s thresher, recalling the dramatic wartime "double threshing";
  • Craft workshops and scenes of rural life: ceramics, basket weaving, ironworking, piadina making, lacemaking, vintage photography;
  • Shows, 1940s swing and jazz music, puppet theatre, and dialect comedy;
  • Conferences and educational events at the Museum of the Gothic Line, the cultural heart of the event.

Re-enacted Battles

The most anticipated moments are the re-enactments of the battles that led to the liberation of the village: the reconstruction of the summer 1944 combats, the German night assault, and the recapture of the town at dawn on September 1, 1944, with the exploits of British soldiers who advanced up the Valconca hills. Pyrotechnic displays, smoke, and scenic effects convey the intensity of those days.

Memory, Family, and Territory

Organized by the Pro Loco of Montegridolfo, the event combines historical accuracy with activities for the whole family, featuring "old-fashioned" gastronomy, trekking along the actual battle sites, and guided tours of the Museum of the Gothic Line. This event has made this small municipality in the Rimini hinterland a national reference point for those who love 20th-century history and World War II re-enactments.
