The Frittata Festival in Casalvieri

In the Ciociaria summer calendar, there is an event named after a simple yet beloved dish: the Frittata Festival. It takes place in the small Frittata district, a hamlet of Casalvieri, a town in the province of Frosinone tucked away in the lush Comino Valley, in southern Lazio. It is one of those local district festivals that define the identity of a territory made up of many small villages, each with its own history and traditions.

The star: the frittata sandwich

The heart of the event is the tasting of the frittata sandwich, expertly prepared by the residents of the district and beyond. The recipe remains faithful to its simplest, most genuine version: eggs beaten and cooked with zucchini, potatoes, and onions—the garden produce that has always defined the peasant cuisine of this part of Lazio. Each frittata is tucked into a crusty roll and served at the stalls, where the aroma fills the streets of the district. To accompany the meal, there is always local wine, both red and white, served at the dedicated stands.

A story of community

The Frittata district owes its fame to this very festival. The event was born in 1983, thanks to the initiative of the late Onorio Ianni, and continued until 1992. After a few years of hiatus, the festival was revived in 2010, thanks to the commitment of Emanuele Ianni, Onorio's son, and Emilio D'Agostini. Since then, the Frittata Festival has returned to being a staple of the summer, drawing in locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.

Part of the Casalvieri Summer

The festival is part of the rich Casalvieri Summer program, a series of events that energizes Casalvieri from July to the end of August with district festivals, sporting events, musical evenings, and other food festivals such as the Meat Festival and the Ferragosto Festival. In this context, the Frittata Festival represents one of the final events of the summer, almost a farewell to the warm season before returning to everyday life.

Those who attend the Frittata Festival will not find a large commercial event, but an authentic village celebration where the pleasure of food intertwines with conviviality, neighborhood chatter, and the typical hospitality of the people of Ciociaria.
