The National Music Festival set against the backdrop of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere
Every year on June 21st, the summer solstice, Fossacesia joins the Music Festival, a major event celebrated simultaneously across Europe. Originating in France as the Fรชte de la Musique and promoted in Italy by the Ministry of Culture, the festival brings live music to streets, squares, and iconic landmarks with a simple, generous principle: all concerts are free and open to anyone who wishes to perform, whether amateur or professional, in any musical genre.
In the municipality of Fossacesia, in the province of Chieti, the Music Festival finds a setting of rare beauty: the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, a Benedictine monastic complex overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi, perched on a promontory between the Adriatic Sea and the rolling hills. The 2026 edition, the 32nd of the national event, was held on June 21st on the abbey parvis, chosen to create a dialogue between music and the site's thousand-year-old beauty. The year's theme, "The Voice of Places," aimed to highlight the cultural and architectural heritage of Abruzzo through music.
More than ten artists took to the stage set up in the monumental area, showcasing a variety of voices, instruments, and musical expressions, taking the audience on an emotional journey. The event, promoted by the Municipality through the Department of Culture and Events, has become a defining appointment for the community: previous editions have featured as many as seventeen or eighteen local bands and singers.
The Fossacesia Music Festival has become a ritual for the start of summer. Its spirit is one of sharing: the festival belongs, first and foremost, to those who create it. Emerging and established musicians share the same stage, valuing the act of making music and free participation. The event is part of a broader summer calendar that brings life to the sea, hills, and cultural sites of the town for months.
Between spirituality, history, and notes, the Music Festival transforms Fossacesia into an open-air stage where art meets the identity of the Abruzzo region.
The 2026 edition of the Fossacesia Music Festival, the 32nd of the national event, was held on June 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM on the parvis of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. The chosen theme, "The Voice of Places," highlighted the cultural and architectural heritage of Abruzzo through music, with over ten artists taking the stage. The event was promoted by the Municipality of Fossacesia, with Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Culture Maura Sgrignuoli and Mayor Enrico Di Giuseppantonio, who sought to enhance the acoustics and spirituality of the Abbey. All concerts were free.
Over ten artists took turns on the stage set up on the parvis of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, featuring a mix of voices, instruments, and diverse musical expressions. The organization did not release the full list of artists in advance.
By car: A14 motorway, exit Val di Sangro or Ortona, then follow signs for Fossacesia and the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. By train: Fossacesia-Torino di Sangro station on the Adriatic line, just a few kilometers from the town center.
The event is held on June 21st starting at 9:00 PM on the abbey parvis. All concerts are free.
We recommend arriving early to park near the monumental area and to enjoy the sunset over the Adriatic from the abbey square. Bring a light jacket for the evening.
