Four days of non-competitive walking through the beauty of the Canavese region
The Foglizzo International 4-Day Walk is one of the longest-running and most beloved events in the Piedmontese non-competitive walking calendar. Established in 1973, the event takes place every year in late August in Foglizzo, a small town in the Canavese area in the province of Turin (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont), drawing walkers from all over Italy and abroad. Organized by the Proloco Foglizzo A.P.S. with the patronage of the Municipality of Foglizzo, the Metropolitan City of Turin, and the Piedmont Region, it is affiliated with FIASP (Italian Federation of Sports for All) and the IVV (Internationaler Volkssportverband), making it valid for international Volkssport movement recognition.
The heart of the event is its four-day consecutive format. Each day, participants can choose between three distances — 10, 21, and 42 km — tailoring the effort to their own pace. Those who push themselves to the limit can accumulate 168 km over the four days, while those who prefer a more relaxed rhythm can stop at 89 or 44 km in total. Walking is at a free pace, with no competitive goals or rankings: there are no winners, only the opportunity to discover a territory rich in architectural, cultural, natural, and gastronomic beauty on foot.
The routes wind along low-traffic paved and dirt roads, mostly in shady and restful environments, touching numerous villages in the Canavese: from Caluso to Mazzè, from Candia to Montalenghe, and even Agliè, Ozegna, San Giorgio Canavese, and San Giusto Canavese. It is a slow and authentic way to traverse castles, Erbaluce vineyards, rice paddies, and morainic hills, letting the walk itself tell the story of the landscape.
Along each route, seven refreshment points are set up with hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and fruit; upon arrival, participants find spaghetti, hot broth, milk, wine, and fruit at no extra cost. The start and finish lines are located in the picturesque courtyard of the Castle of Foglizzo. As this is a non-competitive event, no merit-based prizes are awarded, but those who complete all four days receive a local product, a diploma, and a commemorative medal; special awards (bronze, silver, and gold medals) are also provided for long-term loyalty to the event.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the 4-Day Walk is also a festive moment for the town: convivial dinners in the Castle hall, accommodation options, and a friendly atmosphere that brings the same faces back every year. An event that perfectly embodies the spirit of the Canavese Pro Loco, capable of combining sport, hospitality, and the promotion of the territory.
