About Fòcara Cesarina

Every winter, the Porto Cesareo waterfront lights up for the Fòcara Cesarina, a massive devotional bonfire in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot. At the Scalo d'Alaggio, a nine-meter-high tower of brushwood is set ablaze before the Ionian Sea, accompanied by animal blessings, brass bands, hot air balloons, food stalls, fireworks, and Salento folk music concerts. A tradition born in 1937 from a vow of devotion, it is now one of the most evocative fire festivals in Salento.

The Fòcara Cesarina: Fire uniting sea and roots

In the heart of the Salento winter, when summer tourism feels like a distant memory, Porto Cesareo (Province of Lecce, Puglia) gathers around a massive bonfire burning by the sea. This is the Fòcara Cesarina of Saint Anthony the Abbot, a fire festival that transforms the Scalo d'Alaggio on Piazzale Berlinguer into a stage of flames, music, and popular devotion every year. The theme of the event, "Fire, Sea, and Roots," perfectly captures the soul of this day: the fire of faith, the sea embracing the fishing village, and the roots of a community that has never forgotten its origins.

A tradition born from a vow

The history of the Fòcara dates back to 1937, when Nonna Ronza made a vow to Saint Anthony the Abbot for her son's safe return from the war. That act of faith sparked a tradition that has been renewed for nearly ninety years, passed down through generations of Porto Cesareo residents. Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of animals and fire, is celebrated in many Salento towns with the lighting of fòcare, but the Cesarina version is unique: it burns just steps from the water, with the reflection of the flames dancing on the Ionian Sea.

The spectacular bonfire

The absolute heart of the festival is the brushwood pyre, built by hand by volunteers in the days leading up to the event. It is a true piece of ephemeral architecture: a bonfire standing nine meters high with a diameter of eight meters, which in the most recent edition was inspired by the legendary towers of Atlantis. As evening falls, the tower is set ablaze amidst fireworks, light shows, and the emotion of thousands gathered on the waterfront.

Devotion, folklore, and community spirit

The day blends religious observance with popular celebration. It begins in the morning with Holy Mass at the B. V. Maria del Perpetuo Soccorso parish and the traditional blessing of the animals, the core of the Saint Anthony the Abbot cult. Along the town streets, you will find an artisanal market and a fair showcasing local specialties, while brass bands bring the seaside village to life. In the afternoon, food stalls serve local delicacies, hot air balloons take to the sky, and by evening, folk music concerts bring the sounds of pizzica and the rhythms of Salento to the stage.

Why it's worth the trip

The Fòcara Cesarina is the perfect opportunity to discover the winter face of Porto Cesareo, a jewel of the Ionian coast known for its Marine Protected Area and Caribbean-like beaches. Watching the bonfire ignite before the sea, immersed in the warmth of the local community, is an authentic experience far from mass tourism circuits. It is a free, family-friendly event that celebrates the bond between the sacred and the profane in the most genuine part of Salento.

Fòcara Cesarina — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Fòcara Cesarina, initially scheduled for January 25 and postponed to February 1 due to bad weather, lit up the Scalo d'Alaggio with a nine-meter bonfire inspired by the towers of Atlantis. A full day of Mass, animal blessings, brass bands, hot air balloons, fireworks, and Salento folk music concerts before the Ionian Sea in Porto Cesareo.

The 2026 Fòcara Cesarina took place in Porto Cesareo on Sunday, February 1, following a postponement from the original date of January 25 due to adverse weather conditions. A bonfire nine meters high and eight meters wide, inspired by the legendary towers of Atlantis, was erected at the Scalo d'Alaggio and lit in the evening amidst fireworks and light displays. The event, organized by the Fuoco, Mare, Radici association chaired by Ezio Calcagnile together with the Saint Anthony the Abbot Festival Committee, combined religious devotion and popular festivities with markets, food stalls, and concerts until late at night.
